BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

I was thinking of picking up something for Sophie.Which is better to use cat food or dog food?

I believe cat food is more flavorful (because cats can be very fussy) and appealing. Also because it comes in small cans and skinks eat so little I have chosen to use that. Wellness brand has served us very well.

Ok. I think i might try cat food. Where can you get Wellness?

I have ordered it on the web and have also found it in our local Blue Seal Farm store. Some organic markets, pet stores or vets may have it. If you search Wellness Cat food on line you will find choices. I use the chicken, turkey and beef and chicken flavors. Good luck.

I've heard that cat food has more protein in it. Not sure how true that is but I know young skinks need more protein than adults so I feed cat food a little more often than dog food. As she gets older, I think I'll only offer cat food occassionally.

Cat food does have more protein, as cats are obligate carnviores, whereas canines will eat some plant material in addition to meat.

However, good quality dog foods have nearly as much protein as some cat foods.

You pay your money, you take your choice.

Look for tins with the meat part as the highest content, with not too much cereal, fat and additives

No By-products or meal!

I'm not sure if this is a good Brand. But if all else fails i can give it to my cats if its not. It is Nutro Natural Choice Chicken and Turkey Platter.

Speaking of by-products, last time I looked at a can of Iam's chicken dinner, it had by-products. What gives? I could have sworn that they got rid of the by-products and that I had cans without it.

loki has only eaten dog food once. the first night i had him i offered dog food which was yummy. since then...nada

Wellness Core reduced fat dog food - my current choice for feeding to my pink tongue skinks, alternating with canned snails.

Just recently I've been offering a little scoop of Natural Life Dog food, chicken flavor of course, and Sanchez loves it. he prefers the taste of that over crickets and mealworms now, but I still offer them with his veggies just like the dog food.

I tried Wellness cat food for convenience. Even though I mixed in crunchy squash so my skink had something to bite, and I wiped his mouth off after meals, he got the droopy lip problem! A week of his regular food and a shed fixed it. So no more cat food for us.

It's no big deal, but search around and you will find quite a few posts mentioning it.

O.K. thanks. I am down to mixing about a quarter teaspoon in with a few drops of water to mix with the greens. Haven't seen any problems but thanks for the heads up. I will keep my eyes open.
