Ollie is BLEEDING!!

Postby lmb02 » Thu Oct 04, 2007 9:31 pm

I went to say hello to Ollie today. I took him so he could walk around and get some exercise. When I picked him up I noticed that he had these little black balls in each ear and what look liked some blood dried on the side of one. I cleaned them off with some warm water on a Q-tip. He was acting normal and responding to sounds. I know that my rat's mucus is a red color and that it just looks like blood, so please, please tell me that their earwax is just a deep red color similar to blood. I really don't want him to be sick or injured. If not, what should I do? Thanks to anyone who helps!!!!!!

I wonder if the little black balls could be ticks. That might explain the presence of blood.

My first thought was ticks or mites, wouldnt there be more in the enclosure and across the body though? the other thought I had was stuck ear bags, but I couldnt think of a reason for the blood ,unless he caught the ear vent scratching to get them out :noknow:

scratching the ear is what i thought but if there was physical black spots i would treat for ticks it cant hurt.

I don't think that they were ticks because there are no other signs of them but there was blood. Plus after I thought about it, the balls may have been dried blood. I haven't seen anymore since them but I am still worried about it!

Could be a ball of old shed that condensed up.....that is why they itch at their ears.
