chow time- how lazy or not lazy is your skink?

Postby zennygirl » Mon Oct 24, 2005 9:43 am

i keep being surprised by posts that say their skink races to the food dish to eat. i have to drag pup over to his food and lay him virtually in it to get him to eat. then he'll eat away. just wondering how many other skinks are like this or if i have the only skink too fat and lazy to walk over to his food.

Yuri used to sprint to his food. Now he's not so fussed but he'll still schmoozy over after a few minutes to guzzle it all down - or guzzle what he doesn't get all over his face...and chin...and legs...and tail...

Mamma: She'll find the food when she is good and ready and then she plows in and licks the plate clean

Nona: he varies, sometimes he'll meander over on his own as I'm putting the plate in, other times I have to wake him up by putting the plate next to his nose and lure him out of hiding

Sprout and Stewey: both make a run for the dish as soon as it hits the ground. Sometimes I don't have the plate all the way down before Sprout is sitting on it with his face smeared with food. You would think I starve the poor guys.

Tarz: has to be shown his food. I put the plate in there and dig him up and shove his nose into his food. He'll lick it and glare at me and go back to hiding, but as soon as I leave he'll come out and eat. If I don't show him the food he doesn't come out.

Kaper and Benson are the only 2 of mine that will find their food on their own. Checkers will eat once I take her to her food dish, and Squirt I have to practically force feed just to get him to eat a few bites.

Bubba doesn't sprint for the bowl, but he does 'waddle' to it as soon as I put it in his cage.

Boo has to be dragged to the bowl and showed the food. Then she will take a few steps away from the bowl and wait for me to leave the room before she eats.

Bandit sniffs the air when I put his bowl in the cage, then slowly lumbers over and devours it.

Raymond is my sprinter. But then again, Raymond sprints for everything that goes inside of his cage...including my hands!

Benji changes from Sprinter to "Just leave it right there, I'll eat it when it suits me".

All of mine generally go right to it and chow down. They don't always sprint, but sometimes just walk over, etc. Basically they all come right over to eat.

Phoebe gets in her moods at times and won't eat unless I hold it up for her, etc.

When Piper sheds he seems to 'like' for me to play with his food and he'll eat it. He'll chow down when I first put the dish in and he'll stop in the middle of eating. Then if I mix the food up with my finger or a spoon he'll get excited and try biting my finger/spoon. When I move away from the food then he'll attack as if to keep me from getting it. During non-shed times he comes right over and gobbles up what he wants.

Cole will go right to his food, but then stop in the middle of eating and look up at me with his messy face. If I come and wipe his face and then push his food back into a neat pile he'll continue eating - this continues until he's officially done and walks away from his dish.

Wyatt heads right for the dish and gobbles it up. He'll then look up in the sky waiting for me to give him some more (he has obviously learned that food comes from above). He usually finishes off what the others don't eat, and will fall asleep when he's done (sometimes right in the dish so he gets upset when I wake him up to remove the dish).

Lil Paige will run right out (as long as I'm not too close to her tank) and gobble her food before returning to her hide. If I add more food to her dish she'll again come running out to eat as long as I'm not too close.

I feed them all as much as they want to eat each day.

Sometimes I wonder about Phoebe's weight, but I don't think she's the largest of the babies from last year. She doesn't eat everyday though, but pretty much everyone else does (Cole has his moments).

They are special...and a handful!

I do sometimes give them a group day of fasting most weeks, and Sunday brunch is usually light (frut salad with worms and/or live snails)

Spike is my sprinter. He's normally at the feeding spot before I have the plate all the way in.

I put Frankie's dish right in front of her so she eats right away.

Baylee come straight to his food but he takes some round about way so he can sneak up on it.

Saphira needs to be put on top of her hide next to the dish so she sees that it's there.

Stella will come straight to it if she feels like eating otherwise she just ignores it.

Hehe, Phoebe sounds just like Sassy.....have to hold it up for her.

Slurp will walk over and eat.

Enzo will RUN to the food.

Eugene....well.....we love Eugene.

TQ sounds like Tarzan.

Sunny will find his food and eat. Moe walk over to the food if she's awake...

Niko will run to the food and take bites so big that he often grabs the entire food dish and flips it around. Then he charges all over the tank rubbing and banging his head on the logs and sides. Nutzoid skink! Rabid during feeding time!

+ 1.1 Eastern (Eugene, Enzo)
+ 1.2 Northern (Niko, Pearl, Peach)

That's weird. Sprout always cleans his plate and asks for seconds. I think Baylee eats well too. What about Kaper and the others? Does Andrew have them now? I can't keep them straight!

Lil' Guy doesn't seem to care much about food in general. Sometimes even if I stick his face in the food, he is not interested. Everyonce in a while, however, he will suddenly decide it is feeding time and clean his plate.

I forgot to add that Phoebe will not walk over to her food dish. It must be placed in front of her face, and then she'll decide if she wants me to lift it up for her or not.
