Well, what I was trying to say is that sometimes the commentary/stories that go with the pictures make them more interesting, funny, etc. That in itself can make one enjoy or appreciate a picture more than you would have without it. Kind of like an ad with just a picture is not the same as an ad with a witty phrase or funny line - it makes a difference. But, it's what you guys want - I'm just in a bad mood....so forgive me. ;)

Bad mood? I mean, yeaaaaah, what you said really upset me, and everyone else.

At the same time, there are 20 other votes for various other pictures. Does the one with 15 win? Or, should there be a vote off between the two? That way, the 20 other voters have a choice about which picture they like for the calendar. What if 19 of the 20 voters liked the one with 14 votes? I guess you can't really change the voting rules now. Just something to think about.

WOW! That's my new favoritist avatar. :2thumbs: But I must admit I haven't any idea of what you just said.

Okay, so maybe that wasn't the clearest of posts. Let's try again. Right now, entries #3 and #10 have 12 votes each. That's a total of 24 votes. They are clearly the favorites! BUT, 41 people have voted. That means that 17 people (40% of all voters) did not vote for #3 or #10. Follow me so far?

Now, let's suppose when the voting is over with, a total of 55 people voted. #3 has 15 votes, #10 has 14 votes, and the other pictures have a combined total of 26 votes. That means #3 wins by only 1 vote. Does this really make #3 the clear favorite? Remember, that nearly 50% of the voters did not vote for #3 or #10.

In such a close race, should there be a vote-off? Perhaps the 50% of voters who did not vote for #3 or #10 favor one picture over the other. Their votes may help one picture win by a larger margin than 1 vote. The winning picture is going in the calendar. If the initial voting is soooo close, shouldn't the remaining 50% of voters be able to help choose which picture they want to see in the calendar?

Like I said, it's just a thought.

The only problem I see with that scheme is that there would be no way to make sure only the other 26 people would vote on a vote-off. :? You would pretty much just have to let everyone vote again for the two finalist pictures.

Might as well continue with the "thought" -- how close should the results be to warrant a vote-off? Is a two-vote victory enough to stand on its own? :chin:

I kind of think that if we do this we should wait until next year just for consistency. If I remember right, I didn't win by a huge margin when I won the contest a couple months ago. Maybe if we had a vote off then I wouldn't have one, that means that we are being unfair to whoever was second place that month. We only have this and next month left, why don't we leave it as most votes win for the remaining 2 months and then start up a new rule in January.

I agree that it's not that fair to start it now. But, it's definately something to think about for next year. Speaking of the calendar, we've had contests for July through now. What will be the pictures for January through June?

I think a win's a win whether by 1 vote or 20. It's like losing the lottery, doesn't matter if you're one number off or 1000, you still didn't win.

If we have a tie for first like we did a few months ago then I think the tied pics get posted again for a vote off.

Just my thoughts :D

Compare having a vote-off to voting in American Idol or other skill-based contests. As the weak competitors get weeded out, then the voters get a new chance to vote for the stronger competitors. Even if they didn't vote for the finalists previously, they will still have a say in deciding the winner.

Unfortunately, a vote-off does have disadvantages. The main one is that it just prolongs the contest. Another one is that you might have trouble getting lots of people to vote again. Another problem is that the identity of the finalists would probably be determined by the time the vote-off takes place. This might sway one person in voting for one picture based upon whose it is. Finally, you could do the vote-off and still end up with a tie or one vote differential.

I guess a vote-off might be more trouble than it's worth. All the same, I think this month's contest is very exciting!

Phew!

What exactly is majority rules then? The winning picture with 30 votes, or seven other pictures with 29 votes? Hmm, I just made myself see your point.

You know what's scary? The post I made on Monday contained a "hypothetical" example. In that example, I said #3 had 15 votes, and #10 had 14 votes. Look at the voting results!! #3 has 15 votes, and #14 has 14 votes!! I'm psychic!!
