Irian Jaya or Northern?

Postby curious_bluey » Sun Jun 18, 2006 6:20 am

What is the personality and size difference between the two? I have found a good place that sells both captive bred, for a decent price. If I could, I would get both, but I do not have the space.

So, Irian Jaya or Northern?

Northerns are my favorite but both blueys would make a great pet.

yes, they both make great pets. I have 1.2 I.J's but the Northerns are my absolute favorite skinks. I have 3.4 and a 5th female that is debated weather she is Northern, Eastern, or intergrade. I love my I.J's but I have to say I favore the Northerns over all my others.

So, I'd say go with the one you like the looks of and the personality of the most. You wont regret it. ;)

Unfourtunatly, there is only room for one (and only money for one). My parents will only let me keep reptiles in my room, no where else in the house, so there is really only room for one, unless I get rid of my dresser, but I have a TON of clothing, so that isnt an option.

I will probably get one after I get a job (which I hope will be soon). I will have to buy EVERYTHING on my own, so it isnt going to be cheap. And I just bought a crested gecko (my parents bought the tank for my b-day) 3 months ago, so my bank is drained.

On average (minus the skink) how much did everyone here pay?

Also, on this site I read that I will need to cut my bluey's nails. If I have a piece of slate or tile, will that cut down on how often I will need to cut its nails? How many of you actually do cut your bluey's nails?

ditto to that. :) And it really isn't all that hard. Easier than cutting my dogs nails. :P Excluding my keis and Cocoa but that is just because they are nasty skinkers to start with and wont let you hold them, never mind clip them. lol. But my easy going guys the Northerns and I.J's don't have a problem at all, I can actually do it without a second person to hold them while I cut for most of them. ;)

Edit:  After I posted this I realized, I never have to cut Cocoa's nails anyway. lol. she doesn't have any. She lost all the ends of her toes before I got her.

So, another lesson. ;) Make sure when they are shedding that all the skin is removed from the toes and the tip of the tail. :)

Do you mind sharing how much this place is charging? You can get a great price on babies from Ray and Andrew on this site. And they have high quality babies. They both come highly recommended and many of us own their babies.

Sure, I don't mind. Both sub-species are captive bred.

Irian Jaya baby: 170$-190$
Northern baby: 200$-230$

I would get one from Ray, but I am in Canada. So unless someone knows a reputable person in Canada (Ontario to be more specific).

If they're captive bred and have been handled regularly, either species will make a fine pet.

Me too! I'm bias though. Both are terrific. The IJ's seem more intelligent to me also. I've always wondered if that possibly had something to do with them being a natural mix over hundreds of years...who knows!

And yep, clipping nails are a must! But it isn't too difficult, especially once you've done it a couple times.

+ 1.1 Eastern (Eugene, Enzo)
+ 1.2 Northern (Niko, Pearl, Peach)
