Identification
Mouse spiders are a kind of Trapdoor spider. Females are up to 3cm long, very stocky with short, thick legs; they are black or dark brown. Males are 1-2cm long, with longer legs and long palps which look like an extra pair of legs. Both sexes have enormous fangs and fang bases. A diagnostic structural feature is the very steep slope on the back of the head area. Male Red-headed mouse spiders (Missulena occatoria) have a red head and jaws and blue abdomen, while male Eastern (M. bradleyi) and Northern (M. pruinosa) mouse spiders have a whitish patch on the top of the abdomen.

I'm going to have to prep myself -- every time I open this thread there are large spider pictures that creep me out!! Don't get me wrong, I think spiders are amazing and very helpful animals, but they still give me the willies a bit! We need a separate spider thread with a warning about pictures so I can be mentally ready!! :lo:

Over 15 years of collecting them, I've only kept a couple and given many of them away. They are probably worth a fortune!

Very cool!!! Those pictures are actually totally different marbles from the ones found around Nevada. Those look like actual marbles... the ones around here are called marbles but are about pea-sized and smaller, sometimes they're blue, purple, green, brown...

...I want to go find real railroad marbles now.

NOMAD 1000 of them were picked of a womens back lawn in 1 night .infestation We get one simler in the west but glossy back and live under logs..We had a ganet bitten at work yesterday by a dugite , we thinks cause it was a deep sea water bird we had a large bowl of fresh water,.The Dugite would have gone into the water. the ganet was territorial of its cage , we seen the snake slither off ,and picked the ganet up , and it was having chronic convultions , and bulk horrible symtoms and died .. Also Ganets might eat dead sea snakes , it was in the wrong spot , now the lakes are dried up were chasing snakes away every day.

Arkangel and K.W. , with regards to the marbles Ifound some like this as a kid, it turned out that they were out of Victorian bottles,they used to act as a stopper before screw lids were invented, maybe not the same as you've found,I was going to post a pic but my brother skanked my bottle collection years ago

The "marbles" I'm finding are definitely the RR ones, not bottle stoppers.

Now I'm interested in the colorful ones Kyle finds and the bottle stoppers. I'll have my eyes glued to the ground now.

If I can find them I'll take some pictures. It's about time for a tour-de-Nevada soon anyway, I may go looking for more! Who knows if they're still around.

It's possible, although I think the different areas our respective trains were running definately gave them their own interesting finds and histories... I've always thought trains were super cool.

ugh, trains try spending 4 hours a day on one. In summer at 43C with no air conditioning. Our network is called City Rail, but you can probably figure out from that name what vernacular we call it by ... replace the C with Sh

Old steam trains are cool though. We have one, the 3801, that does weekend trips up the mountains. You can hear it's whistle for miles so I always take my dogs for a walk up to the tracks to wave at the people.
