Old steam trains are cool though. We have one, the 3801, that does weekend trips up the mountains. You can hear it's whistle for miles so I always take my dogs for a walk up to the tracks to wave at the people.

My uncle wrote and illustrated two books about Australian steam trains.

you know whats funny, there are plenty of mountain towns in nz but there all ski lodges so no-one says dumb stuff about them lol

Only snow to be found in Aus is in the snowy mts (sth NSW) and Vic highlands. Oh, and Tasmanians....but they all have two heads and are distant cousins (as opposed to Sth Aussies...who have 2 heads ...but are on the mainland :hehe:

)

I went to NZ for the first time last year, we went to Hobbitown & all the LOTR stuff (Mt Doom):lol: NZ was awesome, we heli-rided into glaciers, went white water rafting and Conor did some snowboarding. NZ is great. And much cheaper than skiing Aus. We are tentatively booked for July this year. We got engaged in sheep-shagger country last year and are looking to get married there this year.

P.S. Ian, I got suspended from school (catholic girls skool) for crossing tracks when a train was coming. Haven't dared chuck rocks at them since!

It looks like I'll be spending a week or ten days in NZ before I head to Adelaide for the semester, so I'm starting to take a look at itineraries. Glacier hiking is definitely on my list (Franz Josef glacier, maybe?) I was also considering going to Hobbitown and everything, if only to live Dwight's dream of walking the path to Mordor and hiking Mt Doom :lol:

I'm just not sure about transportation. How are the bus/rail/public transportation systems for traveling between cities? How about islands; is plane travel necessary? I could always do my own research, but this is so much easier

My sister is moving to Tasmania. She started an online relationship with a Taz, and is leaving the U.S. and moving there to be with him. She is quitting her job, getting rid of all her furniture and stuff, and flying off to live happily ever after. :crazy:

It will be interesting to see what she looks like with two heads. :lol:

You actually remind me of her in looks. Long blond hair, gorgeous. She did modeling for awhile. I was really upset when she told me what she was doing. I tried to be supportive of her but what I really wanted to say was, "ARE YOU NUTS??" But my steadfast husband said, "Maybe she's just more adventurous than you."
