No, we didn't use to stop it at 50 pages. So at least our first one was even larger.

bah... 2 of my 8 mystery snails were dead this morning... halfway sucked through the filter intake. They have gotten onto it before, but it's never been fatal... =(

what kind of filter? can you just use an air powered sponge filter thats what we use for our fish fry that can't handle the strong suction of a power filter.

Try the aquarium filtration version of a drain screen:

If you get some aquarium-quality sponge and use a couple of rubber bands to encircle the intake of the filter, it will disperse the suction well enough to not grab onto anything you don't want killed. I've done that for smaller fish and babies that couldn't handle the force. Usually I'd find them inside the filter box and I just dumped them back in, but...

...at least this way, everything will be safer. The drawback is you have to take it off and scrub the particulate matter off about once a week.

well, the only reason they got to it was that they crawled up a fake plant that was also caught and got stuck on the suction grid thing. I repositioned the plant, so it shouldn't happen again.
