Rosechafer Larvae?

So we just got back from a rather unhelpful and generally unfriendly reptile shop... We've been advised that Rosechafer Larvae are a good snack for Blueys, but obviously we have no guide to go by. They went on to say they had a much higher level of calcium and lower fat content than waxworms (which they also had in stock).

Can someone tell me whether they'd be ok for an occasional treat? They look pretty decent, but they have some rather sharp mandibles going on there which makes me worry for my skink's tongue...

I'm not real familiar with that creature, but I would caution and, yea, i guess i would advise, not to feed skinks outdoor food like that, unless you detox them first. You never know what kind of chemicals or parasites they've been exposed to and that could affect your skink.

evil pixie, I think these are bred in captivity anyway and specifically sold as reptile food (snakes in particular). I doubt the ones I've bought have been exposed to chemicals - but thanks for the concern anyway

Ewww!! It has a face like a Superworm... man! those things can pinch hard! But it's soooo fat... did they tell you the nutrient content on 'em?

They claimed that it had a much higher calcium level than waxworms, and a much lower fat content. Sounds good to me.
It was about £2.99 for maybe 10 larvae, so not all that expensive either. Probably going to be a regular treat if Savage enjoys them...

What shop were they in, I get my food at "The Reptile Zone"in Filton, save your money mate and get those pesky snails out of your garden :lol:

Manifestly unhelpful and very unfriendly, unfortunately

I'm planning on going to the guy on the Gloucester Road in future as he's bred Blueys for years.

Hi there, I'm wasted's other half.
The staff at the reptile zone were very rude, not to mention that one of their pythons was kept in appalling conditions.

As mentioned above the guy on the gloucester road will be our main source for things. He was so helpful, friendly and informative and he's been breeding and caring for all kinds of blueys for 30 odd years I think he said. I'd reccommend going there

Can't wait to pick our new baby up this weekend :ohyes:

Thats strange they're usually good,a little cheaper than most,but hey ....
Let me know how you get on, I used to use a place in St George but they moved to Kinswood,they were great and I got Blue from them, its too far out of my way now which is a shame
