Should a different substrate be used for a baby?

If so, for how long? I was thinking of using aspen when it is an adult.

I personally don't like to use aspen with babies, but it's really not a big deal. Aspen can be slippery when they're first moving about, and I'd hate to get splinters in their eyes or nose at such a young age. Again though, not a huge deal at all. I usually use just towels or a little bit of coconut husk.

I don't totally understand your logic witht that zach - They go through a heap worse when in the wild, and even though they are captive bred, they are still born with a wild sense but become accustomed to the captive life easily. Maybe you're just a big softy and mother your blueys a heap! :P

You ever used aspen? It's not exactly the best walking substrate -- it's difficult for a tiny lizard with even tinier arms to maneuver around compared to hard ground. Babies are a lot more active than adults. At the same time, I've also seen babies burrow so much because they're so active that the splinters effect their eyes and get stuck in the nostrils. I had an eye infection once in a baby because all he did was burrow around in the substrate nonstop.

As they grow older and calm down a little bit, then I bring out the substrate.

As I said, it's not that big of a deal. Just something that I do after experiencing these things with numerous broods of babies.

And I am a big softy.

I was going to start a new thread, but this one pretty much has the same idea. I've been planning to use shredded paper towel for a substrate when I get my baby. My logic is that it's easy to burrow, absorbs well, and easy to replace. This sound like a good solution guys?

I'd like to know about the shredded paper towels, as well.

With my other brand new herps... mainly Crested geckos... I always start them on paper towel and move them up to live, potted plants and then fully planted vivs.

Is that a good idea for a Bluey baby, too? I mean, stages.. not necessarily the same ingredients ;)

Thanks!

For my babies I liked using various clothes - old wash clothes, socks, tshirts, etc. They could burrow in it, easy to change/clean and they could cuddle in it as well.

From carepage.

That's shaved. A problem is a lot of folks get shredded and shaved mixed up. Usually the package won't even say, so you need to view it through the plastic of possible
