Breeding

Postby kvega92 » Fri Jun 08, 2007 7:42 pm

I just had a random question. When it is okay for blue tongued skinks to have breed. How old do they have to be? Is it a hard process.

(on a side note please dont think I am running off to breed my baby its just a question)

"hard" process? That's what she said! Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm definitely not a breeding expert, but did you check the Care Sheet? I know it has a section on it, but I'm not 100% sure it covers everything you're asking. Until i get a second skink, i didn't bother to memorize that section, hehe.

It's usually their size (length & weight) that determines sexual maturity (not their age).

It depends on the species but probably circa 11 inches Snout Vent length and your bluey would be ready to breed.

In the wild it can take 3+ years for them to grow to that size but in captivity it can be achieved within 1 year.

Whether or not it's a hard process depends on you blueys. My easterns breed with out any fuss this year but I couldn't get my northerns or keis to breed.

I believe it depends on the actual pair. Literally how cooperative they are. I'm not sure. And I think the average minimum age is 1 or 2 years, though as Geoff said, it matters more on the actual skink's development.

Tink is huge, isn't he? From the pics I've seen, he'd be prime for breeding...

I know I absolutly love Tink. Thats why I think he would have beautifu babies. Dont you think zach. I do not want to breed for profit. I am hoping eventually to breed Tink and the babies would be given to knowledgeable school teachers t use in the classroom. I would love to start a BTS class Pet initative. Rocky was such a valuable pet in the classroom. He tied into mathematics and science standards. I feel it is important to educated children early about pets and teach responsibility. THat is really my goal. I was thinking of finding a female or maybe someone next year who wants to breed with Tink
