merauke questions

Postby bluetongueguy64 » Thu Jul 12, 2007 5:46 pm

I don't have a blue tongue skink yet but I have been looking and I really like meraukes. My questions:
Are they good beginner skinks? Would you recommend them for a beginner?
Can I house them in a 30 gallon breeder? I know in the caresheet it says 30 gallon breeders are ok for BTS but I didn't know if they were good for meraukes specifically.
Are there any good breeders that sell them? I have googled them and searched for them but I can't find anyone that sells them.
Thanks,
Chris.

Meraukes are not recommended for beginner blueys mostly because there are no breeders for them. Almost all Meraukes you will find will be WC or LTC. There are several here on the forum that are trying to breed Meraukes, but so far, no luck.

Is there any reason you'd choose a Merauke over the rest, besides looks alone? There's an abundance of babies from a couple of breeders (Zach and Ray Gurgui) that would suit your bluey needs just fine.

Talk to Andrew, he has some great northerns, silver tannis, yellow tannis, for sale at a good price. His site is http://www.seikereptiles.com/

Because they are longer I wouldn't put a Merauke in a 3 foot long cage....personally I don't like anything shorter than 4 feet for any of them (except maybe Tanimbars). Unless you take your bluey out for a good length of time daily. Could just be me.

The recommended species for beginners are Northerns, Easterns and IJs. :)

A good choice! You can always get more when the right one comes about...

...though some people have taken a few more steps to this end than others, and now have a whole fleet of skinks. :hehe:
