how do you know a skink is properly "shoulder-trained" and will go for a walk without diving off?

if ever...?

There's really no such thing as a "shoulder-trained" BTS...it's always a risk! If you do it, do it on the bed or couch, but I wouldn't walk around.

When I pick mine up I always keep him low to the ground....just in case he squirms and falls. You don't want a bts to drop 5 feet from your shoulders as this will most likely result in a severely injured skink. :|

Mine is quite happy sitting on my shoulder as I walk round the house, as long as I dont go racing round, you can feel the little claws in your skin so know if he intends to move at all, he prefers it to being carried, no matter how he's held he waggles his front legs like wings, tooo funny
MMMmmmmm... Something???????
