Irwin Update

Postby JWSR » Thu Sep 27, 2007 4:44 pm

It's been a while, so I thought I'd update everyone on Irwin's progress. He's still proving to be the fastest growing reptile I have ever had the pleasure to have in the family. :)

Now, at 4 months-2 weeks old, he is 15.65" long and weighs 344 gr. I think he's going to be a big boy!

Some pics taken today...........

That's totally ridiculous! It's only 1/3 elephant, and the rest is greens and vegetables.

Diane - His diet is a lot of variety. The meats are either boiled ground turkey, boiled ground sirloin, or boiled cubed chicken breasts. Each meal, he gets one of the meats, 2 different greens (one is always dandelion, his favorite), and one yellow and one green vegetable. Topped off with a small amount of either fresh strawberries, raspberries, cantaloupe, or banana. Then when he's had all he wants from his plate, Irwin, (Bindi won't touch them yet) will down about 10 to 15 silkworms. Calcium w/D3 is added to every meal. Reptivite is added to every other meal. This is a vitamin they both will eat. I usually use Herptivite for Hannibal, but they won't touch the meal with that taste in it.

The growth difference is very apparent between Irwin and Bindi. The growth rate in Irwin shot up when I started him on silkworms. Bindi is growing much more slowly than Irwin was at Bindi's age. When Bindi decides to take silkies, I expect him to start his growth spurt. Silks are about the all around best live food I have found for feeding herps. The food for them is expensive, but I think it's worth it. I buy the dry silkworm chow in 10 lb. quantities, and order the silkies 100-200 at a time.

The greatest help to my meal prep is the investment I made in a "FoodSaver" vacuum sealer. After the meats are boiled in either meal size balls or cubes, I drain them well, dry them off, and seal about 20 per bag and in to the freezer. I just remove two per day and re-seal, drop into a cup of hot water for five minutes, then mash or chop them up for the meal. This machine triples freezer time. No air, no freezer burn, I love it! :D

Oh, Irwin.

Are these pictures true to his actual colors? I don't even see any black. He's like a Caramel Frappuccino®.

And darn it, Hijinks, now I'm craving a Frappuccino!
He does look good enough to eat! White Chocco and caramel. . . I do love how pale Irwin is. And Wow, that tail!

He looks great!!!!

Funda- In my experience northerns grow the fastest and get huge. Easterns grow a lot slower and only get around 18 inches. As long as your guys are eating and active, I wouldn't worry about how big they are.
