In my personal Opinion, I think it's safer to refer to silver reps such as Andrews Tannies and 'Silver' rather than Axanthic. After I first viewed his Silver Tannies (baby pics) I found it hard to distinguish between the silvers and the normal ones he had. Both looked like they had a yellow tinge. However, looking at other pics, You can definately see the silver aspect.
This is probably why he referred to them as Silver rather than Axanthic.
Yet another term that will be thrown around to sell blueys for a higher price i guess.
** Disclaimer ** - No comments in this post were directed at anyone specific. Numerous "breeders" often sell blueys as super duper special morphs to gain more money, when in fact the specimen is either in shed or a hybrid. These instances and others have been noted many times, and do not warrant the specimen to be classified as special. The last comment was simply referring to this fact.
If you want to see cool colouring, check out Andrew Seikes Sunset skinks. They are truly mouth watering.
hehehe - sounds like he's paying me to promote his skinks. maybe i should hit him up for a cut of any sales. hmmmm.

I agree....I would just call them silver as well. I also agree that these words are thrown around all the time and it isn't always accurate. Silver Tanimbars is just one spectrum of "color" for the animal -- it isn't a genetic defect. It'd be like calling a black lab melanistic I suppose to put it in perspective.
Tim, although the color is on the more uncommon side, I wouldn't call it quite rare. I've seen quite a few. One of my favorites of Kelly's....Cole! Tim, you still have a little stunner just the same!

Really, a solid black tummy? And he was the only one to look like this in the whole brood of babies? What color were the other one's? Were there any really light one's? He could just be on the light end of the spectrum -- do you have pictures of the parents by chance? Where are all the other babies now? Now it's getting interesting! I will look forward to your new pictures. I've never thought about what color Cole's tummy might be - I PM'ed Kelly. Does anyone remember who bought that last pic I posted? I think it belonged to Julie Tougas at one point in Canada I think?

seems he was the only one..we bought him direct from Indo from a private breeder..from what i know he was just a fluke that happened from a group of Indo babies... so there is no way of knowing what genetics he came from
if anyone is at the Tampa show this weekend he will be there to view
we have produced a few strange babies this year but nothing like this
thanks tim

Well that comment about labs isn't entirely true. If you're a white person born with black hair, does that make you melanistic? NOPE!
Hair colour doesnt define if something is melanistic or not. Changes in the Agouti gene does.
So 'Scientifically' that's not entirely true.
I'll refer you to a study done by the Departments of Pediatrics and Genetics at Stanford University School of Medicine, and the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in Ithaca.
Here's the link: http://jhered.oxfordjournals.org/cgi/co ... ct/94/1/75
Also, here's what Wikipedia has to say about melanism: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Melanism
I hope that helps.

Well, melanistic, or hypermelanism, jsut refers to darker than normal coloration, as there is more melanism. The agouti color is based on black grey and brown/red hairs. The characteristic of melanism just means there is more black in the agouti color.
