MVB Watt and Brand

Hey, My Local Petstore ( Very informative and smart) said that the MVB is the best way to go. But I dont know what Brand is reliable and is the right watt to substain the right temps. Any information would be appretiated(sp?)

Ktaylor, you are using compact flouresant, not MVB.

MVBs are mercury vapor bulbs, which produce heat, as well as high levels of UVB.

Powersun makes a decent one, or so I've heard.

I prefer the tubes as they give better coverage and dont nock the temps outta wack.Why do you think the petshop is so knowledgable?many tell you what they think you should here not actually what you NEED TO HERE, go carefull,think about the bigger picture, and consider all the variables.

Because I go there like every day. Im one of those people that read about reptiles all day on my computer. Every thing on the good recommended care sheets is what they say. And their setups are perfect and has exact temps.

I really like the Mega Ray bulbs. My beardie has thrived under it and it has lasted a lot longer than the Power Suns I tried first. The prices have come down also since I first bought one two years ago. I believe the self ballasted ones are $40. www.reptileuv.com

No, they are fine. Your 5.0 produces beneficial light, but your 2.0 is worthless. However, they produce no heat, so they are only half of the equation.

Basically, reptiles need a warm area, and a cool area, and as they move back and forth, they thermoregulate.

So, you need one side of your tank to be warm, under a heat lamp, and the other side cooler, without a heat lamp.

Sorry nomad but you are wrong.... there has been studies done and the compact s have been found to burn, not all of them but there are new companies coming onto the market and they're selling dodgey lamps that don't have the correct statistics

I think he's just talking about the UV. An extraordinarily powerful UV bulb could indeed burn your skink's eyes, even though there is no real actual heat. It's the UV radiation that's burning, not the actual heat.

Yup... heck, you can get a sunburn in the winter... something to think about!

Yup, the UV rays can burn the eyes, but the heat is almost negligible.
