Herpstat temperature controllers

Postby Hijinks » Sat Nov 17, 2007 12:31 pm

<infomercial>

In a strange and possibly illegal situation (which really isn't that uncommon here in the ghetto), I don't have complete control over my heating. Room temperature can fluctuate wildly while I'm not home, which wouldn't be good for the skinky. I know a lot of people use dimmers to adjust the power of their lights according to the ambient temperature of the room, and I did this myself over the summer when things were predictable. But I can't stay home to fiddle with dimmers all day.

And so after seeing it in Jerry's (JWSR) setup, I got one of these to do it for me: http://spyderrobotics.com/products/herpstat2.html

It is absolutely that best investment I've made for Ping. I can be gone all day knowing that no matter what the building heat is doing, he is at a safe temperature. It can be used to monitor two tanks, or a larger tank with two temperature zones. I believe it's meant for things like heating pads and ceramic heat emitters, but I'm using it with two incandescents and it does maintain the temps. They do flicker a bit as it adjusts the amount of power to them, but I think of it like the sun going behind a cloud. I have both lighting devices configured as heating devices, but the Herpstat does have a "lighting" option where it will...get this!...gradually brighten and dim a light to mimic sunrise and sunset! If your house gets super hot in the summer, it can also control a cooling device.

It is $219 + shipping, and completely worth the money. For another $79, you can get some software and cables so you can hook it up to your computer (usb and broadband required). It will email or text message you if the temperature goes beyond a safe range. Kind of gimmicky, but very cool nonetheless.

Anyway, this all sounds like a lame corny ad. Maybe it looks like overkill. But a lot of people posted about how to keep temperatures consistent, especially in winter, and this is a very reliable way to do it. And in my personal situation with the building heat, without it I think I'd risk coming home to a cooked skink!

Thanks for this post. I was trying to do a search to find this kind of info within our forum but I can never find anything with the Search button. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Anyway, I hope to one day save up for something like this. Especially if I get another bluey to keep track of. 8)

This is a great product, and another way to be more energy efficient...

I agree that thermostats/temp controllers are a great option. Tell me, does your stat have a backup? I've just heard of a few times where eventually the wiring gives, and leaves the power wide open. In most cases this does little, but if your using it with powerful heating elements just to keep the tempurature down (you have a 100w but the therm keeps it like a 60w) then leaving the power wide open can be dangerous. Having one with a backup is the best option IMO.

I don't think this should be a problem in yout case, I'm just throwing the info out there for anyone else who's thinking of using a therm like this. Your therm sounds like it's great, and I realy like the sunrise/sunset option :D

Yes and no -- if there is a problem with a probe, it fails off. If the 5 amp fuse fails, it fails off. If there is a problem with the triac (part that controls the variable output), then there is a chance it can "stick". The owner/manufacturer (an individual who actually answers email!) addresses this concern on his site and in an email to a customer:

http://spyderrobotics.com/support/failsafedocument.html
http://www.ball-pythons.net/forums/show ... ostcount=8

Anything goes wrong with the probe and it will shut itself off. It has a 5 amp fuse inside which means if it was overloaded the fuse would fail protecting the unit and of course powering off. The only component that can cause it to fail in the ON situation is the Triac that controls the AC going to the heat device.

...

Instead of using a 50 cent 6amp triac all Herpstats use high quality 15 amp triacs that cost about a buck more. The difference is even when the heat goes up my triacs are well within range and since the fuse limits the amount of amperage to 5 amps my triacs are not stressed.

In fact the Herpstat II has temperature sensitve fuses and a digital sensor inside the device that monitors internal temperature which shuts down the outputs if the internal heat exceeds the normal operating temperature.

The failsafe point is a good one though. If there's any danger to the device it looks like it would be from heat, not too much power. I usually have the thing on the floor but put it on top of the cage for the picture. But so far there are no reported triac failings from this particular product, and I am not worried. :) I tried bulbs at different wattages until I found two that usually ran near maximum power to maintain the temps, so if it does fail "on" then chances would still be low that the skink would get flash fried.

Cool, sounds great ^.^ Thanks for the info too. I'm very glad you did your research and got the right bulbs! I love the people on this forum :D

Just make sure that any electrical terminals you have played with during installation are done up properly, with a well fitting screwdriver, most electrical fires are caused by loose connections and over loading(fuses will save you on the second point)
MMMmmmmm... Something???????
