Animal reaction to the bts

this was probably the biggest upset ever. i pursueded my mom and got her to ok it and now im getting one. i so excited. We bought everything we need.

Dogs and cats and any other wild animal with big teeth and claws are predators of reptiles. You will never know when that killer instinct will kick in, so better safe than sorry and keep them all apart!

IMO: Never trust your pets unsupervised with your BTS. Your cats have instincts, and are still animals, so even if they're friendly for years, you could have a sudden and very nasty attack. Some people have pets that seem to have no hunting instinct and allow the interaction, this is totally at your own risk.

My dog, Pryce, is scared of my lizards, but also curious, especially when the lizards are eating. I only let Snoopy near them if I'm within a foot and ready to grab. However, Snoopy is a coward, so a quick huff from the lizards will send her running. However, she will never be allowed to play with them (her version of play is much too dangerous) or even sniff at them unless I'm right there.

When you get your BTS, let it settle in, then introduce it to your cats while it's in your hand. If the cats behave, reward them. Hopefully they'll sniff it, then get bored. Later allow your BTS to wander around you, and see what the cats do. Reward them for calmly watching or ignoring it. Personally, if Snoopy stays away during my lizard feeding, or just lays around when they're near her, I give her a treat, sometimes the leftover lizard food.

It's neat that BTS recognize things -- they will be comfortable with people, then go crazy at the site of a dog or cat. All mine are like this except Eugene.

Tyler, that's funny you posted that! That was the first thing that popped into my mind. That was tragic; poor Heather.

I think any tame house cat would chase/play with/eat a mouse. I think the same could be said for a small BTS.

My cats sit and watch my skink, but never bother him. My shepherd mix dog does not bother the skink at all. In fact, she thinks any species of animal other than dogs are her best friends. My other dog is a corgi/dachsund mix, and he is the only furry animal in the house that I have to keep far away from my blue tongue.

We have all of our lizards and our sugar gliders in our spare bedroom/office on the main floor. We installed an outside metal screen door on that room so we can see into the room and it doesn't get as hot as with the door closed. It looks kind of weird having a screen door inside your house but that way it keeps the 3 cats and 2 dogs out of the exotics room. It definitely came in handy the one night I left the sugar glider door open by mistake. I woke up at 3 am because I heard Thelma the sugar glider barking like they do. She was on top of Belle's cage across the room and couldn't figure out how to get back to her own cage. Scared the crap out of me because who knows what could have happened had she gotten lose in the house. Plus the lizards were probably wondering, what the heck's going on up there????????

For the most part my adult cats ignore my blueys. The foster kittens on the other hand are nosey and pay too much attention to them. The thing is they are young and if something moves they pounce. My adult cats do pay more attention to my Kei though. I think it's because of the longer tail. My northerns have tried to eat my one cat's paws because they look like their mice. If I do have the lizards out and the cats are around, they are never left unsupervised. Also my cages are in the basement and my cats are only allowed down there when I am down there.

My cats love to sleep on any and all of my herp cages. They generally ignore the herps tho. Except the new Kitten, he is fascinated qand would definitely pounce! The other cats get semi interested when the lizards Dragons or Bluey are out, but they are never unsupervised and stop if I tell them to. My Husky on the other hane is too big and too interested to trust near them yet, so I hang onto his harness if Bluey is out and about.

I let my senior rat (died couple months ago ) out and forgot that my skink was out roaming the floors as well. I heard a weird hissing noise and went to see - the rat had bit the skink on the snout and the skink had his mouth wide open, eyes closed and was hissing like crazy. The rat was all excited and confused, seemingly ready to jump on the lizard again. Good thing the rat was old (slow) and I was able to grab him before a second bite. The skink was attacking me when I got near it because he was so shocked - slapping me with his tail and hissing...
Thank god the rat only scratched a scale with his teeth...

I won't be making that mistake again...

When people hear that I've got a skink and rodents, they always ask if the lizard has eaten any of my rodents - "nope, it's the other way round"

I remember a post maybe last year where someone had a rat escape, and it got into his BTS rack and stole a juvie. I've owned a rat, and I loved him, but BTS and rodents are obviously not a good combo.

ur pets don't need to know each other...my cat sits on top of jaks tank and stares-sometimes for hours.

it doesnt seem to bother jak at all...but the cat shows WAY to much interest for me to let them near each other.

My cat just sits and watched Tink. She has grown up with a lot of animals in the house. She likes to watch Tink move around the house. As much as I trust her I do not leave her and Tink alone. Sonnet (my cat) she is a natural hunter. I also keep the top to the cage on at all times. I don't think the cat would ever hurt Tink but I am also not willing to take the chance and find out.

That was DeadEye, they(the rats) ate the tail off of a sick bobbie, and would of eaten it alive if he hadn't been there to stop it.

I remember that too, but I thought there was another where the rat actually stole a BTS from it's bin? I remember the person being amazed that the rat would take on a lizard larger than itself, and that the BTS lost. Did I dream it?

well my dog ignores my skink and goes away. the only time they share any interaction is when bluetooth wakes up and has a big black nose in his face lol he hisses and the dog growls and leaves XD
