diet: have you tried this?

Postby brunetteoctober » Wed Nov 21, 2007 12:41 pm

Has anyone ever tried this organic dehydrated food from the honest kitchen?

here's a link
http://www.thehonestkitchen.com/products/force.shtml

i used to give it to my dog (until it became too expensive) but i was hoping it would be a really great option for me with cricket. its great for dogs, mine really liked it and she looked incredible wile on it. its raw dehydrated - human grade - food, its also 100% organic. you simply hydrate and feed.

here are the ingredients:
Hormone-free chicken, organic flaxseed, potatoes, celery, sweet potatoes, apples, alfalfa, organic kelp, honey, zucchini, green beans, cabbage, bananas, papayas, yogurt, basil, garlic and rosemary.

here is the nutritional analysis:

Protein 21.0% (min)

Fat 14.0% (min)

Fiber 5.5% (max)

Moisture 7.0% (max)

Calcium 1.6% (min)
1.8% (max)

Phosphorus 1.0% (min)
1.2% (max)

Magnesium 0.09% (min)
0.12% (max)

Sodium 0.2% (min)
0.24% (max)

i know its missing some vitamins, so i was thinking i would add a vitamin supplement to it also. plus, i am an avid fruit eater, so cricket would get fresh fruits along with his meal, plus i would probably still feed him phoenix worms too.

thanks again :D !

dehydrating foods

Postby brunetteoctober » Wed Nov 21, 2007 1:07 pm

sorry. new idea.

after really reading more in the food above - it probably wouldn't be the best for cricket. SO i have a new idea ... what if i dehydrated his current diet? it would be the same concept as the previous, but with food that are for sure the best for him. the only problem i see (besides the lack of fresh foods - that i would give to him periodically) is that when you cook veggies, they loose their nutrients. but technically, I'm not cooking them, I'm dehydrating. does it make a difference, is my real question. :chin: from the little bit of research I've done, dehydrated food loose about 3-5% of their nutrients. frozen about 20-30%.

Don't know much about dehydrated food, but I do know that the the food in your first post doesn't look up to bluey standards. I think you already noticed.

Are you planning on rehydrating before feeding these items to cricket? I would think the lack of natural water content in the food could cause evacuation problems. Not sure if dried food would hold their interest as well as fresh either. :chin:

For me, organic or not is irrelevant.

Spices, honey and fat would be my biggest concern.

Why would they include garlic in dog food? Garlic is not good for dogs.

I didn't know that garlic isn't good for dogs! I knew that chocolate wasn't good though.
I guess you have to think, where would a Bluey get Honey in the wild? Or rosemary for that matter?
But I have to say too, organic literally tastes better to me, especially with potatoes, I can totally tell the difference!! I feed the family (including lizards) organic as much as possible.
