Excuse the crappy camera bluriness. And my hidiously filthy floors.


He often sleeps on that shelf, next to the overly-heated computer xD He also sqeezes himself into that tiny backpack behind him for fun. That green clothy bit behind his is my bed cover which he climbs up and surprises me when I sit on him. ^_^

Not sure how old he is in the last pic, but an intereting comparison.

Anyway, onto my question. Now that's it's winter (and I'm in oh-so-cold Canada), I need a secondary heating source for him for the night. He's still active and is getting enough heat during the day, but at night it can get pretty cold. I also can't get a good enough humidity with the cold and dry air, and his bottom scales are really flakey. So I want to add heat near his water. If it's electric, I would like it on 24/7 since I don't want to get a whole other timer. It doesn't matter how strong it is, since I can reduce the light bulb wattage. His enclosure is wooden and painted. It sits directly on the floor, but if needed for any reason, I can prop it onto something so it doesn't come in direct contact with the heat thing. So I'm basically asking what would be the best thing to use, pads, tape, chord, packs...?

You can add a red bulb to get a little extra heat. They give off heat vs. light so you can keep in on all the time. Ceramic heat emmiters are also an option. How cold is it getting at night?

Adding a humid hide might be an option for the humitity. You can take a rubbermaid and cut a hole in the side. Add moss to it and just keep it damp.

If you do decide to get a red bulb, be careful about the one you get. I just got one for Kaa and it definitely gives off tons of red light. And it says on the box that it's infrared or something. It's supposed to be barely visible

As of now, the lowest temps have been around 17C, but I think they will only keep getting lower, and I need more heat for the water bowl regardless. I would prefer not to get a bulb though, as I'd have to buy a second lamp for it. I also sleep in that room, so would light be an issue? Actual infrared ones emit virtually no light, so I guess the brighter ones are just pet-store quality.

I'm a canuk too, winterpegger, and jeeze does everything get cold here. How low does your house temperature go at night? Anything above 15C is still just fine. I use heat mats for my snake right now, and they work fine. Whatever you do get, make sure it's not in the tank and has no chance of getting wet. For humidity, I'd use a humid hide if possible. Too much humidity can cause an RI, so giving Blossom the option of going into the humid hide or not helps prevent them.

Very cute! Don't worry about the blurs and the floors ... we are looking at the skink. What the heck is it with Blueys and buttons? Mine likes to eat the buttons on the remote. Hmmm ... maybe they don't like what's on the tube?
