Jazmins home! Mouth sore update!!

Postby ewstokes » Sat Dec 15, 2007 11:02 pm

Shes gorgeous and she loves her little cereal box home i gave her. So the guy said he was putting cortizone on the sore and it seems to be getting better. Here are some pictures the first one is one from a week ago and the following pics were taken tonight. Let me know what you guys think and I will be only giving her dry foods. But the question is should I keep putting cortizone does it actually look like its working? Or should I try antibacterial ointment like neosporin instead. Thanks guys.

Also, I know its really hard to tell. But I would just like some guesses on the sex. Anybody got some guesses? She/he has brown eyes

Also, the guy that had her before had her in a 55 gallon with very little to do. just one paper towel and a light with a cereal box. ill get pics of her enclosuer i have her in in a little while once i figure it all out.

he also fed her 9 lives cat food. any suggestions? in the earlier post i was told to stay away from the moist food so i gave her some collard greens tonight but she seemed too tired to eat.

thanks again guys.

Lookin' good. As far as sexing, it's pretty near impossible just by looks alone. Now if you saw some sperm plugs or something...that's about the best way to tell what you've got.

Congrats on getting your skink home. Poor little toeless wonder. Still cute none the less. The mouth sore could be a direct result of the nine lives cat food. I would feed dry foods, ditch the topical ointment and watch for a few days to see what happens. If it doesn't clear up you will need a vet visit. Good luck and keep us posted. :D

Like I said in my past post I dont have the money for a vet visit currently, but in the near future once I do and it is needed or even just for a standard fecal check i will.

Im pretty sure its a female but not positive just based on the previous owner never mentioned seeing sperm plugs, and I believe youd notice something like that. Also its head shape looks like a female and even though i know it has nothing to do with it, she has brown eyes.

Her name is Jazmin, she is SUCH a sweetheart she loves giving kisses and cuddling. SHES HUGE! and if it turns out its a male which im hoping isnt the case because i would LOVE to breed her. (Im currently breeding Beardies), we would name her/him Jazz.

OK ill try to not use the topical ointment for awhile to see what happens. Right now she is using paper towel as a substrate but once the lip thing goes away for a while i will use the stuff that was recommended.

Here is new home. She LOVES it. Any Thoughts?

I would be concerned about those bricks standing up on end. If your bluey tips one of those over it could be a disaster. Looks like lots of places to get a tail pinched. I would remove the food dishes and only put them in at feeding time. Many folks feed out of the viv to keep things cleaner. The drift wood is pretty but again I would worry about tipping and it's over the water dish. One good splash down and the whole viv will be wet. Then you will have to take everything out and dry it. Also looks like there is no hide for your little darling. Somebody will probably get stressed with no place to be out of site.

If it were me I would take out the drift wood, bricks and food dish. Maybe you can find something different to raise the tile (couple of pieces of wood?) and secure the tile to them. Then you will have a hide and basking platform. I may be overly cautious ... just my opinion. I am sure others will chime in with their thoughs.

She sure is pretty! So glad you are taking care of her! The bricks are good for wearing down her nails. But I'm thinking of what Tatoo said and I'd be afraid of something tipping over. With a few "tweaks" to your set up I think she will be hunky dorey! :ohyes:

I dunno, the bricks look pretty sturdy, I like the basking spot very much. If they aren't sturdy, I would consider gluing them together.

I agree, no need for a permanent food bowl, its much easier to just use a small paper plate.

I rearranged it a little bit before your I read your responses, but I think it works out better the new way.

I am just making sure I have a perfect setup and then I will caulk the tile to the stones just to be 100 % safe.

In my new arrangement she has more space to move around on the floor. So when I put her food dish in it will be on the "2nd floor" Also putting the food dish there would prevent some of the bedding from getting in the food. I also would like to provide her a small water dish when there is no food in there (not pictured, only in brain) just so she has something to drink and something to bathe in. Her big water dish is about a foot in diameter and I know that is quite large but as you can see SHE IS HUGE!
Once the lip sore has gone away for good I will add the recycled newspaper bedding or the aspen shavings that dont have as much dust in them.

HER HIDE: her hide is under the tile, you may have not been able to tell in the last arrangement but the entrance is more obvious in this picture and also the hide is larger. I will add a small cereal box in her hide area so she can hide even more.

She is plain view of my bearded dragons. Minkus, my male, seems very interested in her and has been keeping an eye on her ever since she arrived. She doesnt seem to mind. I dont really have a choice to the matter as of the arrangement right now, but when i get some more space I will make her visible to nobody but me.

My girlfriend and I are SO happy with Jazmin. She is so beautiful. I have always wanted a blue tongue skink and now I have her!! She is definetely one of the many loves of my life!
( I also have family, friends, great girlfriend, 2 Bearded dragons (Minkus and Zelda) with babies on the way, and a crested gecko named Winslow. Boy am I blessed!!)

By the way, she doesn't have nails, she has toes, just no nails.

Here are some specifics for the climate of her cage right now:

Current substrate: paper towel
Lighting: 100W Heat bulb and 15" Reptiglo 8.0

Basking spot surface temperature (taken with remote): 100º F
Large water dish temperature(taken with analog): 72º F
Temperature on opposite side of basking (cool): 75º F
Temperature under hide: 78ºF
Humidity near basking spot: roughly 62%

Is that to cold for her large water dish? I know they like to bathe or defecate in there once in awhile so would it be better if I put a heating mat underneath as long as it didnt make it TOO hot? Lemme know

More thoughts?

Here is an image of the cage currently:

Glad you got her and that the mouth is healing. (I will have to take your word on it b/c I'm still waiting for the pix to load!) Be careful that she isn't rubbing her mouth on the bricks. Skinks are smart enough to learn how to scratch what itches! Also, your water bowl does take up alot of space. Maybe you can get a rectangular one instead. I second Nomad on using a quartered paper plate for food. Also, I agree that you might get rid of some of the bricks. I adhered PVC plugs onto the corners of my tile and that allows more room for turning around and such. I think you are smart to stick with the paper towels while her mouth continues to heal. I like the aspen but it does sometimes stick to things. Good luck. Keep us updated! Oh, I just scrolled down. I like what you've done with the renovations!!!!! Looks like much more useable space! I will continue waiting on the improved mouth pictures but it sounds like things are looking up! We love happy endings!

Ooooo. Much better. Now she has room to get around and plenty of space to hide if she chooses. I'd watch the humidity for a few days to see what it does. 50% should be the high on a regular basis. If it continues to stay high you could cut back on the amount of water in the dish. She looks pleased with the renovations ... I think she likes terrace dining. Keep up the good work. :D

I agree that the rectangular water dish would allow for more space, but i just love the size of that dish. its perfect for her body size and she can turn around in it. she has noticed the bearded dragons. do they generally get along? do they threaten eachother?

im gonna keep the permenant food dish for now. i wont keep it in there overnight and i will clean it out everytime just like I do with my beardies.

Do you really think that the sore is going to go away by itself? I bought some antibacterial ointment just in case one of you experts give me the go ahead.

you should have seen the cage she was in before. 55 gallon and shes about a foot and a half id say. so she couold never stretch out both ways! and all she had was a paper towel and the light was actually DANGLED from the cord to where theres only about an 8 inch clearance from the ground. im so happy for her now. she is going to live a long life.

I use bricks to make my hides and only gotten a little shifting, not any actually falling over. I do have several inches of apsen surrounding them though.

Since she's use to eating catfood you might have a problem getting her to eat her greans/veggies with out it. I would just make sure to wipe her mouth when she's done eating.

What kind of catfood is best? She was eating the blueberries fine....
Also is it okay to eat the catfood with her current lip situation?

PS: here is my post about her seeing the beardies

She's a pretty one, and her mouth sore really doesn't look bad at all! It sounds like she was not kept in the best of conditions. I'm guessing she'll do much better in your care. I still would ditch the cortizone. I don't see how it would help a mouth sore. Just make sure there is no food stuck at the jawline. I'd try to gradually ween your skink off the cat food. Try ground turkey for starters.

I'm no expert, but I'm thinking that your skink might be a boy! "she" looks just like my Riff-Raff as far as shape is concerned. A very broad and thick head, as well as some jowels lol...just like my little beast of a boy ^_^
Either way, your skink is lovely and it's good to hear that she's in a good home now :)

ummm, In MY experience, apart from probing, I've found the best way to sex a bluey is simply by Gently squeezing the base of the tail just behind the back legs. If it's soft and somewhat squishy - more than likely you have a Male, if it's somewhat stiff and hard - a girl. You have to be gentle though. I'm spot on with all my blueys, just gave the last unknown Blotchie a check the other day and I'm pretty sure it's a boy, which suckz cuz i need a blotchie Female! anyway, Mouth looks good, Tank is fine, Put the wood back in though, and get a slightly smaller water dish. just my opinion.

Good luck!
