How old is that skink? I suppose I'm leaning towards infection but that could be some sort of tumor as well. Try to talk them down so that you will have money to take him to the vet if he doesn't respond to the mouth rot therapies. You may easily spend much more to fix that sweet bluey than you would to buy a healthy one. That said, I'm a sucker and all my critters (excl my two blueys) are rescued/recycled...I have been lucky that they have all required lots of time but little money. Good luck in whatever you do and welcome aboard. Do post more pix and let us know if things are getting better or worse!

How ironic would that be? Herps with herpes simplex (HSV-1). Anyway, the fact that there is no loss of condition as you put it and no inflammation could also indicate that it's a completely benign growth. It might be a good idea to ask the guy you're getting it from how long the skink has had the growth.

Herpes comes from latin, meaning crawling thing. Herpetology has the same root. The herpes virus looks like a little snake under the microscope, thus the name.

That's why it's ironic. Although, I think it's called the herpes virus because it creeps (e.g spreads). Under the microscope it's spherical.

A cold sore is the herpes virus. HSV-1 ( herpes simplex 1) causes cold sores whereas HSV-2 (herpes simplex 2) causes genital herpes. Do you mean impetigo? Impetigo is caused by bacteria. You might be getting mixed up with shingles which is caused by the herpes zoster virus. You get shingles when dormant chicken pox viruses become active again.

I'm currently working with viral vectors, and I'm forced to share equipment with a lab that studies HSV-2. I know there is essentially 0% chance of me contracting the virus, but I still feel dirty when I'm done working with the shared equipment. I wash my hands like a hundred times. People must think I'm OCD. If the PI wasn't such an unapproachable guy, I'd ask him about the name.

1 in 5 americans has herpes. 1 in 8 Aussies has herpes. So out of all the Americans on this site - chances are at least one person has it. Same with the Aussies. Bit of a spin out when looked at like that huh?

But anyway - Hows the Mouth sore going?

Well for australia - we have awareness ads on TV over here, much like you guys have those Johhny smoked pot ads.

In America, well I've heard it from numerous places, here's what an American government sites says:

It is estimated that as many as one in five Americans have genital herpes, a lifelong (but manageable) infection, yet up to 90 percent of those with herpes are unaware they have it.

Ok well it's estimated, but still you guys are still swimming in STD's over there, and it's an educated estimate.

Check out the site: http://www.ashastd.org/learn/learn_statistics.cfm

It's the American Social Health Association site.

Check this for a stat: The estimated total number of people living in the US with a viral STD/STI is over 65 million. [2] Every year, there are at least 19 million new cases of STDs/STIs, some of which are curable.

and this: One in two sexually active persons will contact an STD/STI by age 25.

Go have a read!

Anyway - How's this lip thing going? I still have no answer!

I think when it comes down to Medical Issues, the numbers are fairly spot on. They do need to do the research so they know what is viable for them to rip off the consumer with.

Also, I'm Australian - I don't really care if 1 in 5 Americans has herpes. Unless they come over here and spread it of course. We have enough STD's in our country.

In regards to your EDIT - I doubt it. But anything is possible. If so it's certainly not violent crimes.

I'm still waiting to find out more about EWstokes Blueys mouth issue.

going by this site: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_t ... tal-crimes

america is #1 with 23,677,800 total crimes and australia isn't even in the top 60.

per capita: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_t ... per-capita

america = #8 United States: 80.0645 per 1,000 people
australia = not even in the top 60 again!

However - #2 New Zealand: 105.881 per 1,000 people (per capita)

We're definately a safer country.

He posted pictures of the mouth in another thread. The sore really doesn't look bad at all.

As for Herpes, I think the rates in Australia are almost as high as in the US. People travel and so do diseases.
