Both land and aquatic snails are fine for BTS. My guys love the golden/apple/mystery snails, which are aquatic. They've also been known to breed like crazy, so that's good.

Does care vary between types of BTS? i.e. Eastern vs Northern care , are they the same?

Generally, care is about the same for most common BTS types. Indonesian species can tolerate humidity better than Aus ones, and occasionally require more of a temp drop to brumate. If you look into getting a rare BTS type, esp. a shingle, there are some differences.

Superworms are a good solid insect to use, as long as you dust them with calcium (phosphorus free).

I'm really glad to hear this, because that is all Kira will eat!! She doesn't acknowledge silkworms / butterworms, but goes nuts for superworms. We dust them, but I was worried that she wasn't getting a healthy enough protien source (we feed chicken etc. as well, but she really prefers superworms). Thanks for the info!! :D

Well it sounds like i will do snails because they dont sound gross, or smelly and maybe butter worms and silkworms (as their live protein)

But them only eating superworms for longer periods of time isnt good for them at all. I personally would stop feeding superworms and start offering the other protein sources. sooner or later, she will get hungry enough to eat them.

I agree with Brad. She will eat other protein if you give the superworms a rest. Blueys are like kids ... they will eat when they get hungry. :D

She does get other protein sources, such as chicken, egg and high quality cat food. Superworms are so far the only live food source that she likes... Sorry, I should have been clearer on that. Superworms are only every couple days, maybe 1/3 or 1/4 of the meals. :) She definitely is like a child with her eating habits!

Oh yeah - we went out and got organic apple sauce (because apples are her favorite food), and we were going to douse the silkworms in apple sauce to entice her to eat them... Haven't tried it yet - but how backwards is that? lol Hiding the protein in the fruit....

Thanks for your concern. :D Any tips on getting them to eat healthier feeders?

To care for aquatic snails is easy
1 tank/bowl,enough water to cover them, some thing for them to eat, greens/cucumber/peas, or just leave the tank by a window and algae will grow in it.I'd also add a cheap or homemade filter for water quality.
you can get snails free from some pet stores as they can be pests, dont get the rams horn sort, the shell is rock hard and too pointy in my opinion. Apple/mystery snails have been mentioned but you'll have to buy them and they can be harder to breed, the ones I've got are small but breed constantly

Katrina ... if hiding the protein in the fruit does the trick why not? It may be that your bluey just does not have a taste for certain things. And maybe as time passes the food preferences will change and things previously refused will be favored. Keep up the good work.

Sounds like it could be an apple snail. You can expect to pay from $2.00 to 3.00 per snail at the pet store.
