What my setup WOULD be.

Postby dragonboy » Sun Jan 13, 2008 11:18 am

Ok, if i were to get a BTS now here would be my setup.....just add anything if u think i absolutly need it.. and give suggestions.
Ok, i would have a 40 gal breeder or a home made cage.
A basking lamp and a 30" UVB(or something close, i think they sell at 36")
With a repti-sun 10.0
Basking area 100-110 degrees
UVB 4-6" away from basking (maybe 8")
Substrate- tile, maybe a box that he can crawl into with aspen or something(i may make a box tht will fit the whole insie of the cage with handles so that if i use aspen i can lift the box thing out and dump it in the woods or whatever....
Diet-
I will probily feed Collard greens and squash on a regular basis with chicken (maybe i will chop it up in a chopper with the greens....oh i was going to cut it up n e ways)
Snails-butterworms-crickets if desperate- and silkworms 3-4 times a week.

I dont think tiles are a good substrate. You should use something that your future skink can burrow in, like care fresh

You could, but you would be better off with all aspen, or cocofiber, carefresh etc. The reason why is that BTS poop is MUCH worse than beardie poop. You don't want to have to scape it off the tile.

It wont smell after u clean it up in aspen will it still smell?
One thing iam confused about is when to clean.
Ok, i know that when they poop , i should clean it up.Should i just try to take the poop out or the surrounding poop...
When should i do a complete change?
Is it ok after he poops is it ok to spray witha disinfectent?
Like the stuff that u see on comercials thats realy not potent and can be used around pets....Also would it be ok to put aspen in a box in the cage so i can lift it out?
The box- i could make it so it would snugly fit againt the glass so it would be easy to clean..

For cleaning, I do a spot clean in my carefresh every day or second day. This is also when I clean & refill the water. I do a big clean every month. However, my guys are all fast asleep lately, so while I still check, there's rarely poo, and the full clean is given another week or 2.

One thing that completely slipped my mind about using tile is poo getting baked on. It reeks, it sticks, it's horrible. I've had it on my basking tile, it was bad.

For this box, would you be able to get the BTS out easily, even if it was grumpy? Why not instead, get some pie plates or baking dishes, and put substate in those? Have one on the cool end, on on the warm, and one in the center. Someone else did a substrate pit at one point. Personally I'd just use substrate throughout. It's really not all that hard to clean.

Oh, using it as a removable liner? That could work, neat idea. Don't use anything that would absorb the urine though, like cardboard. What are you planning to make it from?
