Shameless Lizard Exhibitionism

Postby Scotts1au » Tue Feb 19, 2008 7:58 am

In the spirit of shameless lizard exhibitionism I thought I'd post some pictures of Bluey - yeh my kids named him.

I've put pictures up before but he was looking spectacular in his outdoor enclosure and has matured a bit so I thought some photos might be in order.

He's grown about an inch since I got him in November but the colours seem to be developing with maturity - folks in the US probably don't see anything like this but he is a typical Central Vic form Eastern. I'd only expect him to grow another inch or so (to about 45 cm or a bit larger).

Anyone with a potential Central Vic Girlfriend for him, come October?

He can virtually dissapear in dry grass.

You have a very nice looking skink there and you are so lucky you can take him outside. Here in London it's not exactly the kind of weather my boy Ocho would like well not unless I make hime a fur coat and hat.  Sue

Really great shots....is that a regular tongue coming out, or is he flaring?? That's something..

A little aggitated but not flaring as such.

Just thought it was something a little different to what people probably normally see of Easterns.

I think that most of the blueys in captivity seem to be East Coast forms rather than more inland ones.

Yeh you can see that he gets a few birdy buddies landing on it. The magpies land in the cage and wander around him - he seems unfazed by them but goes native (as Lisa would say) when I come close :-)

I've got magpies, currawongs, crows and even fairy-wrens having a look and pinching food from the temporary pit.

If I'm not going to watch the blueys feed I move the food plates into the hide boxes.
Geoff.

There are a few hollow logs in the pit I put his food in so he can eat in peace. I also put snails, grapes etc in strategic locations so he thinks he is hunting. :-)

There are a couple of brick sized rocks in there that I have put in as stepping stones (don't ask how I know this is necessary), but he's been digging under them. Yesterday I watched him coil his body and push them aside with his shoulder to get the little bugs underneath. It is interesting to see this behaviour, obviously what they do in the wild.

Cats - not so much for an adult lizard
Dogs - to a degree but they don't come down my driveway during the day.
Foxes - very
Birds - only hawks - I'm looking at getting some bird netting.

The netting should fool everything except foxes. Foxes come out predominantly at night when the lizards are relatively safe in the bunker.

The main hollow sleeping log is very heavy and I have also put a tree stump in there which sits over the top of it, locking it down, meaning the combined weight is very heavy (30 kg +). The sleeping log is also placed on a layer of a small concrete slab that I had and bricks layed into the ground around the edges to stop foxes digging in underneath.

The problem will be if the blotchies go in, cos they have a silly habit of sleeping rough, which I suspect makes them very vulnerable to nocturnal predators.

I'll make a mote, a landmine field, a bear trap and a Rolf Harris picture. That should keep the foxes away.
