Winter Eating Habits

Postby kelly_kodiak » Sat Mar 08, 2008 2:10 pm

Hey everyone. Been a long time. Don't know who remembers me with Azul; my very picky witch! Though I love her to pieces  .

So, as all of my topics from way back it's about feeding. I do know once they become adults they can tend to go down to 2 times a week feedings. Well, I'm in Florida, and when it gets the slightest cold outside she automatically goes in her cave and hibernates.

How long is too long in the winter to go without food? Even when she does come out when it warms up she may not eat to good, and yes I supplement with an all around vit and calcium. Even if she doesn't eat she always drinks. She looks wonderful as always. Nice color, bright alert eyes, no disease that I can see at all. She's just fussy and picky as always. The only difference recently is all she wants is out on the floor to go investigating anywhere she can. I thought of trying to feed out of the cage and see what happens. What do you all think?

You posted this in the classifieds (Buy and Sell). You'll get a better response if you post in the General Discussion Forum.

I don't think there really is a too long without food. At least not a set number of days. If the skink is losing weight, then it's been too long, otherwise just let them decide what they want to eat.

Feeding out of the cage can mean the skink associates coming out with yummy food. I tend to feed out of the cage, unless I'm short on time.

Well, Bubba started brumating the weekend of Halloween. He woke up the first week in February. He did not eat the whole time he was brumating, and he has only eaten once since he awoke. So as long as they aren't losing weight, I wouldn't worry. There are pics of Bubba in a thread called 'Bubba pics'. You'll see his weight is good. Those pics were taken today.

Take your skinker to a herp vet, get a fecal done and rule out parasites.
Sometimes that can make a huge difference.
Good luck!

:helpme: May be a dumb question, but does the vet have a tool to get the fecal matter out, or do I need to take a specimen in? With her in brumation and not eating much, if anything, There is no fecal matter for me to take to the vet!

I would wait till eating starts up again and take a sample in with you. You might even be able to drop it off at the office (if you call in advance) when your skink gives you a little present. Or you could call your vet and see what they advise.
