I brought her home! NEW PICTURES MBD?

Postby ssr » Thu Apr 03, 2008 9:10 pm

Hi Everyone! A few of you may remember my thread from a month ago regarding a skink I saw in a pet store. Well, after going back and seeing her three times I couldn't leave without her again. I think she's GREAT. The pet store claims she had the lump and zig zag tail when they got her THREE YEARS ago. They loaned her out to a school as a class room pet for one school year. They had her price marked down from $180. to $80. and then I talked them down to $50. They had her so long I think they thought they'd never sell her. I guess the people in Iowa just don't know how great skinks are. Can you tell from the photos if she has MBD? Also, what sp. is she? IJ maybe? Is she too skinny? I've only had her since Sunday and so far I've fed her some cat food, mustard greens, collard greens, bananas, apples and yellow squash. She seems to like them all! The only thing I could see in her enclosure at the pet store were crickets and a couple pieces of something that looked like freeze dried fruit. Oh, also when I asked them when she had shed last they said she never sheds! They said her scales only flake off a little at a time. What's up with that???? At the store, she only had an undertank heater and a small bowl of water. She LOVES her basking light and rock she now has but hasn't soaked in the larger water bowl yet. You may be wondering why I refer to her as a she, well during our photo shoot she left us a "present" and I got a peek at the action and didn't see any extra equipment so I think she's a girl. Anyway, any help with ID and the possibility of MBD would be appreciated. Hope you enjoy the pictures. Again, I think she's great and am thrilled to have her.

I'm having trouble uploading the pictures. Hope this works when I hit submit.

Well congrats! After 3 years, it will be wonderful for her to have a loving, caring home.

She does look like she has/had MBD, and it will be that way for the rest of her life. However with proper care now, it won't get worse, and may get somewhat better.

The fact that the shed was coming off only little bits at a time indicates the conditions weren't the best. However her feet look great, so if there is retained shed, it's not bad.

Could you get a close up of her vent (bottom, back leg area) ? It looks odd... And a side view shot of the back would be nice as well.

She seems very beautiful. I'm going with IJ on her. Her patterns are lovely. I wonder what she would have looked like without the MBD. However even with, she's a looker.

Awww, grats! I know with the proper food you are already feeding her and the better housing you are providing, she'll be fine now.
There's definite deformity and tail kinks there, but as to what caused it, I couldn't say.
I thought my rescue had MBD, but after a thorough vet check up, it turned out he had been attacked by something that crushed his spine and had broken his tail in four or five spots. The vet thinks a dog may have gotten a hold of mine.
So while it probably is MBD, a good herp vet check up can get an x ray and tell you fro sure what happened, and then you can treat it properly if needed.

try www.herpvetconnection.com

or www.arav.com
to find a qualified herp vet near you..
And again, Congrats on your pretty skinker! :D

that isnt nessacerilly suffering mbd,its mouth area looks normal,i have a juvie blotch that was part of a litter of 4 from a young female that was born deformed,it ,s tail was tucked under neath itself and some of its back,it couldnt right it self or walk,i was going to euthanaise it but after a couple of days it seemed to get slightly better so i decided to see how it would go,that was 3 years ago and the little tacker is going great, its bumpyer looking than your one is but moves around the outside enclosure nicely and eats really well,it has a special place in my heart the poor little thing, but yeah it seems really happy,it hasnt grown as well as its siblings, but yeah its doing well other wise, ill get a pic to show u what i mean.

anyways well done for taking on your bluey, hopefully it gives u years of company :)

congrats on the new skink....with proper care, lighting, and food, she will probably start having normal sheds. She does look like she has something funky going on with her tail, its hard to tell by the pics if the back is affected as well, but again with proper care it wont get worse. I would have a herp vet check her out. I would also say she is an IJ. Good luck with her.

Thanks everyone! The tail will straighten out more than it appears in the picture but she does have a rise on her back that isn't showing very well. I will get a side view shot of the back and post it this weekend.

Fatal - I'll also take another pic of the vent area. She was just about ready to poo when this picture was taken. Could that be the reason it looks strange? It doesn't normally look like that.

Richard - Her mouth does look normal. How does MBD affect the mouth area? I'll watch for pics of the juvie blotch you mentioned.

If the picture of the vent was taken right before the poo, then yes, that would explain it.

Here are some better side view pictures of her back. Oh, and I threw in a picture of her eating eggs and greens just because. . .

Yes, that looks like MBD to me. There is also the possibility it was attacked. A vet could easily take an x-ray and tell you for sure. Glad she's doing better already! Good luck.

i agree with fatal that it does look like mbd. it usually doesnt progress though once the care has been corrected. I would also take him to a reputable herp vet to have him xrayed. good luck with him.
