All canines are not the same species. Examples of canine species: domestic dogs, hyenas, dingoes, coyotes, wolves, etc.
All felines are not the same species. Examples: domestic cat, ocelot, lion, jungle cat, lynx, etc.
While sometimes some people may use the word "dog" to refer to dog-like animals, they are genetically different animals. The same is true for the word "cat" and cat-like species.

if anything that was a silly argument - As if all dogs are the same, it's as Danny said, Coyotes, dingoes, painted dogs - they are all dogs, but different species, Here in Australia we have x bred dingoes with kelpies and blue heelers and god knows whatelse. Personally I think it has nothing to do with the natural balance - because it would seem that americans think we are endangering our wild population whereas I believe it is more about the US pet trade and people hybridizing there. Australians generally look at Blue tongues and don't see them as anything special - it's more like "oh yeah a blue tongue..." where as Americans see them differently. So in reality we here in Australia need not worry about infecting our natural balance - cuz if we wanna see a Bluey - we'll go to the readily available areas and look. And in answer to the response about dog x breeding and skinks x breeding i'll bring you back to the numerous dingo crosses we have here in Aus and how the wild dingo population is not in trouble due to this.

Yes - I used the term WILD dingoes - due to the fact that dingoes are commonly kept as pets up in northern Australia.
Therefore you have WILD dingoes and Domesticated Dingoes.

[quote= Australians generally look at Blue tongues and don't see them as anything special - it's more like "oh yeah a blue tongue..." quote]
Lots of Australians don't just see a BTS and go oh yeah a blue tongue...
I've taken my to the school and kinder and to my classes and lots of people don't know what they are, know what they are but have never seen one or have seen one and still find them fascinating. When I was in year twelve I done my oral presentation on them and everyone except one guy from Bosnia knew what they were but everyone wanted a hold and said how cute they were. And they're still popular pets here!

What I wrote earlier was in regard to the domestic cat (Felis catus) and the domestic dog (Canis familiaris), and so that earlier statement is true.
Maybe it's an American thing but in most contexts, when I use the term "dog" I mean a domestic dog and "cat" means domestic cat. Just my idiosyncratic American way, I guess.
