I think they look creepy. I tried fish and the husbandry is just too much for me. I'm not talking about betas.

Fish husbandry is so easy, however, it is more work than raising reptiles. Water changes are the key to aquatic prosperity, and no one wants to do them. I strive for weekly water changes of 50-90% on all my tanks, which includes two 2.5g, a 10g, a 29g, and a 55g.

That and all the chemical stuff you have to mess with, ph balances, etc. water is tricky to me.. but of course once you're experienced with it, I'm sure it's a breeze.

I think he means a senegal bichir. Remember that they can live up to 75 years.....and get HUGE! Very cool critters though!

Well, huge is relative, most senegals hit 10" or so.

Russman, actually, most experts now don't even worry about messing with their water parameters. In actuality, stable is much better than constant adjustments.

On the nosey! Also if you match your fish to the water conditions where you live you needn't worry about it at all. I live in an area with limestone bedrock so the water we get is very hard and alkaline. Taking this into account I started out with some African rift lake cichlids. They did so well I was up to my ears in babies in no time!

There are so many fish out there it's easy to find the perfect one for your water type.

P.S. Betta's are NOT as low maintainance as people think. To quoute a good friend of mine "Just because they can survive in a mud puddle, doesn't mean you should force them to do so." A betta SHOULD be in a tank that is at least a gallon preferably 5 gallons with the temp kept at about 80-82 degrees they show their most beautiful colors and live the best quality of life then.

I hear ya. My betta is in a filtered 2.5g fully planted tank. He is in heaven

I have bred various SA/CA cichlids, poecilids, as well as various mbuna, all in the same water, acidic and low alkalinity.

My secret? Water changes and a 10x turnover rate, minimum filtration, plus warmer water than usually recommended, around 82-83.

Oh God thats a gorgeous Aequidens! How long have you had him?

I scaled back now I only have two tanks set up. My 75 gal with my mated pair of Jack Dempsys (Cichlasoma octofasciatum) and their various offspring and Mute my 13 inch common pleco and a 55gal with just My ornate.

I used to keep sveral species of mbuna as well. I also had a beautifle pair of longfin oscars.
My mom on the other hand keeps Discus, Altum angels, German Rams, several species of killis, and a whole host of other fish.

I would love an ornate....

All my babies are 3 years plus, the Pleco is the oldest at 7.

Bastian is actually my second ornate the first died tragicly with my LF oscars 3 years ago when the power went out while I was gone. I was devastated.

I got a new ornate but haven't found any more LF oscars.

I dunno. I must not have the knack.. I'm doin fine with my ball python (the first reptile I've ever owned), but I had two guppies and they both died within like 3 days. I had followed all of the directions I knew to follow. They were my first fish, and I realize I'm super inexperienced and all, but everything seemed fine, and then BAM! gone..

and I hear guppies are hardy and easy to care for.

So I go to Chinatown in NYC pretty often. I always see old ladies standing in front of bodegas with those plastic "critter carrier" things, with about an inch of water and tiny red ear sliders inside. Tonight I saw a mom with two kids (tourists) purchase a couple of the turtles. I've never done anything like this before, but I approached her and asked if she was familiar with the care they need. I let her know it is also likely illegal for those baby turtles to be sold in the first place since the shells were well under 4". She informed me she's going to set them loose in her pond with the "other turtles" and "the koi." Those babies are gonna be lunch. I'm not a crazy PETA girl and I generally mind my own business, but the scene made me very sad. I wish I could contact some sort of authority, but they're not going to care. NYC has some ridiculously small number of animal control officers for the entire city, and they've got enough fighting dogs and animal hoarders to deal with (ever watch ANIMAL PRECINCT?). No love for the reptiles. :godhelp:

Don't feel bad, my mom keeps some of the most delicate hard to breed fish out there, and has never had a guppy or goldfish survive more than a week in her care.
