yeah - i found that roaches tend to hide too much. i don't feed them to my guys, but when I used to work with herps for a short time - they fed the beardies, blueys and pink tongues roaches and all they did was hide under stuff. I figured they were only good to feed if you broke their legs.

Haha, Celeste, no I have never eated any roaches, but I assume it would taste like shrimp and nuts or seeds.
Just curious, what's your B.Dubia set up like?
What substrate do you keep your dubias on?
How warm do you keep them at?
Its totally understandable about the lobster roaches. I am extremely hesitant to start a colony because of the reasons you mentioned, though I am where its cold enough that I wouldn't have to worry about them breeding year round. But the thought of them loose in the house. . .
So I get them from a guy who breeds them, and he ( this sounds terrible and it really upsets Tony) cuts the legs off of one side of them for me so they can't climb nearly as well that way.
I have those big feeder tweezers, so I feed those roaches that way, and I watch my lizards actually consume them. That way, I know they're gone, and not running amok in the cage. . .
Zeek used to absolutely adore those lobster roaches. . .

I made a Cricket Salad for my skink a few days ago. It looked really funny. I think I'll try the Cricket Omelette idea, Rocket's favorite foods so far have been crickets, eggs and grapes.

I wanted to make my shingles scrambled eggs this morning, then got the crazy idea to add dry roasted crickets to it and make a cricket omelette!
I started dry roasting the male crickets a week or two ago so they wouldn't just get tossed outside and wasted. The recipe I followed can be found here:

(and for the record, yes I did try one myself! Hey, I'll try [almost] anything once...)

Now i know why you're at home sick.... dry roasted crickets... Eek!!
Geoff.

They're just in the living room with the rest of my roaches. (In cages -- not running around!) They're at about 78 F, with a deep layer of reptibark substrate.
I suppose if I wanted them to breed more, I could put them in the reptile room where it's 80+ and 70% humidity, or on a heating pad like the giant hissers. I think they would probably like the substrate more damp than I keep it, too, but I don't want them to breed too much now.
Speaking of which, I just got three new species of roaches (for pets): Giant Panchlora, Zebra Roaches, and Giant Cave Roaches. But they're all babies, so no great pictures yet. (Besides, the off-topic police might get me if I post pictures of non-food-invertebrates here). ;->
