most people here use plain old newspaper.
But there's the cat litters; either Breeders Choice or Dr Harrys/Coles brand, astro turf, marine carpet, shredded paper, a eucalyptus mulch from Bunnings (can't remember the name, but it's got the word Gold in it), leaves or mulch from your garden if you're confident it's not polluted by pesticides, and now Aspen. I saw Aspen at the shop and didn't like the look of it.

Most people try to keep it simple because blueys are tank trashers, they poo lots, and maintaining tanks can be time consuming.

Alot of people say they use newspaper because it's easy to maintain and encourages good hygiene because it's simple and quick to change, whereas some of the more absorbent stuff on the market (like the cat litter or sand or mulch) make people more inclined to spot clean rather than a full tank change and therefore it's less hygienic.

As far as I'm concerned, blueys are predominantly ground dwelling animals that like to burrow a bit to escape predators and the heat of the day, so I prefer something that allows them that. Even if it does take more time and effort to maintain.

ive used sand and never had probs,but it tends to stick to there food ect so best to feed elsewhere or on a large sand free area,im thinking of going to fake grass and hardened brickies sand,half and half,i dont see any probs with impaction being a prob,lots of blueys live in sandy areas,eg sand dunes near the ocean beach where i used to live was all sand and easterns live all over there,in burrows ect,if you r careful with feeding them there shouldnt be any probs

I think there's no problem with sand, but it seems high maintenance to me. And if sand was added to the plethora of dust bunnnies, dog hair, my hair, lizard skin, food crumbs and general outdoor crap that comes inside when the wind blows onto my floor, well I think that would just be too much for me. I don't like to crunch when I walk!

As mentioned ,it sticks to damp/wet food, I've never heard of them playing JCB with their mouths, and I think thats the only way to get impactions, its another reason I dont turn his food to paste coz everything stick to it{aspen}
