Babies and brumation

Baylee loves me and doesn't want to live anywhere else!!!! He did say he wouldn't mind if you brought Rollie for a visit though.

Like Baylee's going to 'fess up to cheating on you!

I'd love to bring Rollie out someday... I'm not exactly sure if that'll happen but...

...under OTHER circumstances, Zach ever said if there were massive festivities in Eugene I'd certainly fly up with Rollie. I think quite a few of us would, really. I wonder what the Bluey Hotel vacancy would be at Chateu Griffin... I don't think the rest of us would bring a full vivarium.

the other thing to mention is that most skinks don't lose much weight during brumation. They aren't eating, but they also aren't active, so they mostly stay at a constant weight.

That said, Sprout will stop eating but not slow down much so he ends up losing a lot of weight every winter. He doesn't gain weight very fast either so I worry about him. Mamma also GAINED 10 grams over brumation one year.

Baylee always loses as well because he also stops eating but still runs around like a crazy head (though last winter he wasn't quiet as crazy). Unlike Sprout, Baylee can pack on the pounds which is why I don't really worry.

Sprout has gotten a little more picky this year. He'll still eat anything, just not as much. I fed him collards, squash and fig the other day and he didn't even clean his plate...he used to eat everything and ask for seconds.

I told that to Baylee and this was his face- Unless it's winter I don't think I've ever seen Baylee leave a thing on his plate.

Same with Sprout up until this year. I'm not sure what is wrong with him.

I'm so inconsistent with my feedings. I don't ahve set days that they get fed, but I feed all my guys roughly twice a week. Mamma and Kei Kei get lower portions, but the three guys always get large portions and Sprout has usually cleaned his plate. Now Styx is my biggest eater.

I've been inconsistent with my feeding this summer as well, but like you my guys get fed about twice a week. There goes my theory of maybe he's not eating as much because he's being fed to often. How long has he been eating less? Maybe he's trying to stay trim to impress Kei Kei!!! Baylee says send them both to me and he'll show him how to eat!

I too, am an inconsistent feeder. In keeping with their natural lifestyle (and mine!). You don't want them to be so reliant upon getting fed the same stuff, the same time of day etc in case something prevents you from doing so at some point in time and it throws them into some sort of meltdown. OK, I'm exaggerating there! But I don't think it's necessary to have a super strict feeding (and heat & light) schedule.

As a pet keeper, you get used to domesticated animals like dogs and cats and fish and birds etc that always eat whenever you feed them. Then you go get a bluetongue and all theories you ever had about animals being guts's goes out the window!

If i find 1 of mine in a deep sleep ill go pop 1 behind a curtain , and they sleep peacefully there , like they would in the wild .Mainly the boys they get active on the lights at night . When there gut ready i have a few sleepy like a bear in dry places around the garden . Mind you they weighed up big before we let them do in natral + we have proper bandicoot traps set for cats . But all babies stay inside and are warm and spoilt. Mind you there all old hands at sleeping out in the garden , they doit every winter for the last 20 years . With help from a fat tail

ps we made a sock with leg holes for popeye oh he looks quite in it . Thats for watching dame edna on TV hehehe

He started eating less this year. (as in after brumation from this past winter) The only other thing I can think of that I haven't tested yet is that he just doesn't like Spot's Stew. I started feeding primarily Spot's Stew this year. I'll mix in collards and squash and fruit and some meals I omit Spot's Stew entirely, but for the most part, Spot's Stew has been their protein source this year. I used to feed Iams with their food, but I'm afraid to go back to that after all this food recall crap and being vegetarian, I don't usually have meat in the house.

He still doesn't clean his plate when I omit the Spot's Stew though, so I'm not sure what to think. Maybe he is trying to stay trim for Kei Kei.

Maybe Spot's stew doesn't have enough meat in it to intice him. Maybe he's just holding out for the catfood. It took me a long time to switch Frankie and Stella off of cat food in their meals.
