I am so sorry to hear about Quigs, and your fish. I read this thread this afternoon and have been thinking about you all evening. I think you have saintlike patience and a cooler head than most people, for being able to keep it together when you found out what happened.

Thanks guys. :)

I'm hoping tomorrow will be a better day two days of death is more than anyone needs.

I am going to bed and we will take Quigs out to bury him tomorrow when Kira gets back from grandmas.

I've had my day to cry and Kira will be getting a BIG lesson in listening, I hope that I don't have to deal with this again.

I'm so sorry for your loss. Its always hard to lose an animal, and harder still to deal with a child who doesn't understand quite what they did.

When I was a kid I gave the cat a hair cut with my mom's sewing scissors. I basically scalped the kitty, but I hadn't meant any harm. I was devastated that I had hurt her. I wasn't allowed to touch the kitty until her stitches came out. It was an effective learning tool for me, and I didn't do anything like that again. I hope that something similar works for Kira. Good luck!

Sorry I spoke so blunt I just got upset hearing that. i hate to hear of anything getting hurt. I cried once when a big grasshopper jumped underneath my stepping and I couldnt keep from smashing him. I am just forceful with teaching Morgan to respect everything and your right some children react differantly. I am sorry to hear about your loss.

I'M SO SO SO SORRY!!!!!!! :(

She didn't mean it... I used to pet all my fish when I was little. I didn't understand that you just couldn't do that. I really wanted to hold them. I also squeezed a lizard (a common garden lizard) when I was little. I didn't mean to do it... I remember thinking I really wanted to hold him but didn't realized how hard I was doing it... until i well... :( She doesn't know her own stregth.... and she showed you the outcome... cause she felt so bad. ;(

I am so so sorry about your little angel... he's in Bluey haven now:)

On a lighter note...

Girl.... how many cakes you guys eat a week at your house... ??

We only have had so many cakes because we've had so many birthdays lately, Kira's is July 30th, Tiernan's is Sept. 2nd, My mother in law's 2ept.14th,Mine is Sept. 20th, My Husband's is Nov. 26th and our youngest Chayton is Dec. 1st.

We end up in cake up to our ears the last few months of the year.

Kira will be coming home from grandma's in a couple hours, when she gets here we will talk about what happened, and then we will go and bury Quigs.

I think she will learn her lesson, but I still will be waiting awhile before i will get another bluey, I think it will hurt me too much.

I'm very sorry to hear this and am quite upset about it, so my heart goes out to you.

I'm sure with your daughter being so clever that if you tell her straight that she'll understand, but that's just going by how I was at that age. My dad taught me really early about what animals need and how to respect them.

In any case, my thoughts are with you. :(

Postby aggiegirl » Sun Sep 16, 2007 1:21 pm

I'm so very sorry. I was in tears as I read your post. I have 3 kiddos too and my youngest is 4. There are so many good lessons that kids can learn from pet ownership but there is always an inherent risk---to the children, the kids, and as you are experiencing grief/upset/anger/sadness/etc. a risk to the parents as well. I know how torn you must feel. Just realize that she is still a child and is still learning. I think you were smart to have her go to your mom's house while you sorted through your emotions.
We had a guinea pig who I let outside to graze every day. I put her in her outdoor pen one morning. My mom came to visit and brought her terminally ill dog. Unbenownst to me, my younger daughter went outside to bring the pig in. My older daughter decided to let the dog. I immediately thought of the pig in her pen and went to get the dog. Too late. The dog lunged at the guinea pig who was being cradled in my younger daughter's arms. One bite and she was gone. I was devastated. My kids were too. I know how you feel. We have the same rules---you may not get out or let out a pet by yourself. Now, it is harder to get to the pets---our bluey tanks are even high for me. And, when all else fails, now I can remind them "remember what happened to Pattycake..." Your four year old may not fully understand death either. My little one asked about the guinea pig (and our geriatric Newf who died the same month) for months. Good luck to you. You will be in my prayers. I know how much it hurts but time will heal you. Your kids sound like they like animals as much as you and they will be needing extra love right now. So very sorry.

I'm having a very hard time with this...

I'm really sorry that the blue tongue is dead, but what is so alarming is that you admittedly LOCK YOUR CHILD IN HER ROOM like it's the most normal action in the world.... and IT IS NOT!!

Why wouldn't you lock your bluey up instead? That makes much more sense and is far more humane. Lccking your child up or restraining her, physically, (in this manner), should never be an option... EVER! I just can't get over the responses here. Everyone is so sorry about the poor dead skink, but there is some seriously deranged behaviour and parental "lack of" skills being practiced and broadcasted in a public forum.

This is above and beyond insane.... what is the world coming to?

I think you're grossly misunderstanding the meaning "latching her door at night". Instead of jumping to conclusions about her parenting skills, why didn't you ask her to clarify her meaning?

My sister has the same problem with her 2 and 3 yr old little girls. If she doesn't latch their door...meaning closing it until it LATCHES at night, they will get out of bed and roam around the house as well. I don't think this is an uncommon problem.

Calm down....I don't believe you are witnessing the child abuse that you're assuming is occurring.

Is it better that I don't lock her in her room and she gets up and walks out of the house as she has already done twice before? We lock her room at night because she will get up and go/do whatever she wants she can unlock all the outside doors even though they have deadbolts, she can unlock the windows, she can climb up our freestanding refridgerator, she can unlock the lock that is on our oven and can turn it on she did this one day and I woke up in the morning to a house full of gas.

Or perhaps i should stay up all night every night to make sure that she doesn't wake up at 3am and sneak around.

A simple hook and eye latch on the outside of her door keeps her from wandering and potentially getting hurt, it had nothing to do with keeping Quigly safe. She is one door away from mine and if she needs anything she will call for me, it keeps her safe and doesn't hurt her, it simply keeps her in her room.

Don't judge until you are in my shoes, you don't know my daughter, and you don't know me.

I live in a duplex, a mandated reporter lives in the other apartment with her three kids, she is a teacher from the local elementry, my roomates boyfriend is also a mandated reporter, he is works with mentally unstable kids. We have kira's headstart teachers in and out of our house on a regular basis, all of these people know about this and do not feel I am doing anything wrong.

If you don't like my parenting choices that's fine you have that right. But, do try to keep it off the forum as this is a BTS forum, this thread is about my skink being accidently killed by my 4 yo, not about mine and my husbands choices when it comes to our children.

When I was growing up they actually sold straps for parents to use to strap down their little ones that wandered or slept walked at night. They would strap the child down to the bed while they slept. I know this because my parents used them on us.

In this day and age that's inhumane! But it saved my life. We ALL (3 brothers and 1 sister) slept walked as children and I almost walked right out the front door and into the middle of the street before my father ran out and caught me one night. In my opinion, (sorry if this offends anyone and you all have a right to your own opinion) but I think locking a door is a small price to pay to keep a child safe...

I've found it's easier to keep my animals in a secured room away from unauthorized hands. In my old house I had a door that automatically locked when the door shut.

Good luck

I agree with Aneesa on this. We may both be misunderstanding it all, but someone questioned it earlier and used the term "lock" and it was not denied.

I've read this thread several times today and have been completely disturbed by it. As the mother of a sleepwalker I know there are many other measures you can take other than locking a child in her room. And yes, I do believe she means locking her in her room.

My daughter does not sleepwalk. She makes a concious decision to get up, sneak quietly past my room and down the stairs so she can get into what ever she wants. I did the same thing as a child my parents did not lock my door and I would sneak out from the age of 3 on and go gallavanting around the neighborhood, my parents tried pretty much everything, I still would go.

I will repeat and then as far as I am concerned, this subject is closed.

You do not know my daughter and you do not know me.

Please refrain from commenting on my parenting choices as this is a BTS forum.

You really should not judge when you are not in this position. I have an autistic child that must be locked in his room every evening and have bars on his window. Otherwise he will get up and do very bad things. While under supervision during the day we have no problems with him, but at night he can be dangerous. He was jealous of his baby brother and we found him over the cradle with a knife. He was 3 years old at the time. Once when the sitter forgot to lock his door she heard scraping noises in the kitchen. He had dragged the chair to the fridge and climbed it to get the matches...he had crumbled paper towels next to him, he was 5 years old. CPS agrees with our decision. I am sorry, but how DARE you judge another persons parenting skills, not every child is perfect and stays in bed innocently at night.

Luce, I totally appreciate where you are at right now, it is completly frustrating when you do everything in your power to do the right things, and terrible things still happen. Nothing I can say will help get over Quiqly, but you are in my thoughts.
