I buy all my snails online from various contacts I have built up, I'm afraid giant land snails are illegal to buy in the usa but you can use helix aspersa (garden snails) or helix pomatia, both of these could probably be purchased live from escargot farms, they only grow to about an inch so would be a smaller morsel!

Excellent info! I guess I need to look up Escargot farms! Or...try to find garden snails in Arizona! ;)

I guess that is why I can't find any info about snails for sale in the US...they are illegal! :(

Well, I guess there are reasons for everything...

Yes, I think an inch is a bit more manageable... :)

Thanks again!

This is what I do when it is very dry and hot. I get a drippier and a 5 gallon bucket and I make a hole in the bottom of the bucket and then fill it with water and leave it over night in a planted area and they should go in to where the water is or under the bucket where the food is.

Hi guys, Mike, I think the roaches are B. Dubia, or Blaptica Dubia I believe. These are the best roaches! They don't climb like the lobsters, they're not as prickly as the orange heads, they're fat and juicy and they're darned cute!

(I love mine, I almost don't want to use them as feeders, so I'm gonna mark my breeders. I love the way they scriddle around in their container, they really make me laugh!)
The only problem is, they're a little slow to start up a colony, especially in the winter in the Pacific NW!

PM Aggiegirl, she has some and I think she's not too far from you! Maybe she can help you out?

I caught a roach the other week, and put it in a plastic container. I've noticed a black/brown thing stuck to the lid. it's not poop, it's much too big for poop, anyone have any ideas? If it's eggs, would these be contaminated if the mother was?

That's a good question! I wouldn't know if it is an egg sac...their poo is surprisingly large (didn't expect to see it all...) but, I am guessing it is even larger then that...? All the roaches I have looked up are live bearing, so I wouldn't know anything about the egg sacks of roaches. The literature seems to allude to the fact that there are species that lay eggs, but I am not sure. I would try to incubate them and see what happens after a few weeks... ;) I would guess that if the mother was "polluted" then the eggs do have a chance of being contaminated as well...not sure, though.

Ok Blotch, found a picture of an ootheca (roach egg sack). Go to the page below and scroll to the bottom to check it out...apparently they do lay eggs! ;)

I will definitely have to try that...I don't think I have even seen the "normal" garden snails in AZ, though...there are those little helix looking snails occasionally...maybe I have to find a neighbor's garden and try it...I have xeriscape essentially. :)

Hey, Jasjmm27, check out this link for very good basic info on all the different feeder roaches!
Hope this helps! :D

I didn't know that the orange heads actually can produce a defensive odor! Who knew!? :noknow:

Thanks Saille! I have seen that site in my long "roach nights". Sometimes I just get weird obsessions and research for days on end...at any rate, I think more and more I know that Dubias are the way to go...I only went with Orange Heads because they were a good sized alternative, looked cool, and were available at my local pet shop (only have Lobsters and Orange Heads)....So, I guess I can try to feed out the Oranges when the Blueys wake and then try a Dubia colony...they seem to be less trouble anyway. Not that I have even noticed the Oranges...just that their described behaviors and value as feeders (no spikey legs or as much enjoyment of protein) makes it seem that Dubias would be a better choice.

Thanks again! :)

Yes, I thought that was cool as well! You know...it is really weird that I find myself interested in roaches after researching their value as feeders... :-| I have always hated them! I even found myself calling the Orange Heads "cute" and "cool looking"... :?

WEIRD!

Anyway, they are cool little buggers AND they make good feeders...

Those Dubia seem to be the "shinglebacks" of the roach world!

Just reviving this thread a bit, partially to share my success with dozens of baby Orange Head roaches and a whole lot more baby lobster roaches! I was kinda hoping that my Orange heads wouldn't breed so I could just feed them off and move to B. Dubia, but...looks like I might need another colony for them!

I also wanted to point out the EXCELLENT write up on the SNAIL topic by picklette on page 5 of this thread...I noticed the snails topic was revived and thought this fit in there quite well! ;)

Hope others feel the same way...

My point EXACTLY! I think they started breeding AS SOON AS I put them in the garage and FORGOT about them for 2 weeks! :) Just remembered that they needed more water crystals (boy did they!) and I went out to put some in and BAM dozens and dozens of babies! :ohyes: Now I just have to get the blueys to eat them... ;)
