Should I bring the lizards inside during Winter because it's too cold?

To keep Apollo in, or not to keep Apollo in?

Postby Tiliquagirl » Tue Mar 08, 2005 4:39 am

That is the question! Ok, I was just looking at the map of where tiliqua aspera is found and they're found quite a bit higher on the map than where I live. It was alright to keep Candice outside during Summer when it was warm but it will get quiet frosty on Winter mornings, so do you think it will be too cold to keep her outside or can they handle that? Sometimes it might get to minus 5 degrees C (23F) in the early mornings and I think that's too cold, does anyone else agree or am I just being a sook? What about the others? I think I'm going to bring them all inside for the Winter!!!

Ok, well that poll didn't work because there was a third option of bringing them all in but it didn't work and now the poll thing has gone :lazy: .

I think that's too chilly...and I hope none of them get out of that enclosure again! Poor Candice...

I like to have mine inside so I can talk to them in the morning when I get out of bed, and through out the day.

Chuckie, being an Eastern should adapt easily enough but l would be concerned for the others as they are not common in out neck of the woods

I would bring them in for the simple fact that that IS cold, and if they were in the wild, they could probably find a safe place to brumate. In a man-made enclosure, the animal doesn't have much choice. I'd bring them in if it were me!

Well that settles it then, they can all come in. I'll leave them out there for a little bit longer yet because Autumn only just started but probably at the end of March I'll bring them in.

If you want to breed the blotchies Id leave them out, Just give them some deep litter to hide under. They are found right down in Tasmania dont forget and it snows where they are found in the highlands. In fact if you had the right hiding places you could leave them all out, but you wouldnt see them till spring.

Ooooooooooh, I just don't know! I want to leave them out there, I really do but I'm a worry wort and I'll worry about them! I'm getting a couple of new enclosures soon, one for Arial and one for Chuckie because I'm going to bring Chuckie in because he's getting a bit thin and not eating but I'll leave Ernesto and Apollo outside then if you guys think they'll be fine.
It was warm today and Ernesto was out and about so I spent half the day feeding him and Apollo dandelines and different kind of berries, they love dandelines!

The only reason I don't like it is because they have limited spaces to get warmer if they needed it. In the wild, they can go where they need to get warm, but if they're confined, they don't have much of a choice.... (I don't think I said anything new did I :lazy:)

Yeah on second thoughts i cant say wheather you should leave them out or not, i havent seen your pits and dont want to be blamed if something happens and they all die. Only you know how much sun and cover etc etc.
But i still stand by my original post, but thats if i was down there and they were my animals.

No offense to anyone, but since it seems most of us Americans don't realize just how cold it gets in AU ... here you go -- ignore all the stuff about plant hardiness.
Notice how most of the continent has average low temperatures between 5 and -5 C, that's 40 to 20 F
