UVB inside tank

Postby boonaen » Sun Jul 15, 2007 10:02 pm

ok - i found a nifty UVB bulb that is in a securely enclosed housing. because of it's odd size, i am considering velcroing it VERTICALLY in one corner of the habitat (on the inside). i have temp'd it and it maxed out at 95 surface degrees, so i see no harm in allowing the skink to get near it.

as i said, it is completely enclosed and, reason tells em, is safer than putting a metal screen over a heat lamp within reaching distance for the skink.

thoughts?

depending what its enclosed in, if glass it will block the UV bit, also it only puts the uv out at 45degrees in one corner, anylight above 4inches from yhe substrate is wasted, just lighting the tank, put it horizontally with a down facing reflector to maximise the use of UV output
MMMmmmmm... Something???????

Personally, I don't feel comfertable having any lights inside my cage but I know there are quite a few people on here that do.

i'll post a pic in a bit...

the light runs the hight of the tank - it is enclosed in plastic, mot glass.

i knew that having it too high up was a bad thing, but i wasn't sure what was too close. the way i have it set up is that the heat rock is about 3" away from the UVB in the corner. the skink, if it chooses, can walk right up to the UVB bulb and kiss it. but, because it's only 90ish degrees on the surface, there is no burn hazard.

lemme post the pic in a bit and you can critique it.
