New & Improved Darling --> Butters

Hello forum people!

First, Darling is now Butters. It took me a while to come up with her name. Yeah, I know technically Butters is a boy and I like to think that my new skink is a girl, but it's perfect for her.

Butters now eats, basks, and poops regularly. :ohyes: She doesn't eat anywhere near as much as Harley did at that age, but I think she is getting enough. So, she is now healed, however she will probably never have full use of her back legs. She drags them all the time. I have just realized after her last shed the other day that I am going to have to help her remove her shed every time. It just sticks on her back legs and toes. At least she didn't seem to mind having her rump held under warm running water. She seemed to really enjoy it!

I have uploaded two of her initial x-rays. These were the first two taken. For some reason, they didn't give me the one I had done two weeks later.

Awwwwwwww, Butters! I'm glad that Butters is doing better. Is it possible to do "Skink-Physical Therapy to make sure those muscles don't atrophy?
How is the hump in her back? Did it ever go down at all?

I am really happy for you guys that she at least is doing so much better. Thanks for keeping us all updated! :D

Hi Saille,

Physical therapy? Well, I do tend to play with her back legs a lot and that makes her bend them. She has 'something' back there. She can feel pain in her back feet. Very, very occasionally I see her move a leg with no prodding.

I think the bump went down......I think. I see her every day so it's hard to tell.

Kris,

I'm so glad to hear she's doing better. I have a feeling this time next year there will only be a small reminder of her accident. I'll keep my fingers crossed. :)

Ask your vet if there are any "physical therapy" motions you can do for her. Its good that you already play with her back legs. (I personally love their back legs, especially when they "pin" them to their sides and slither like a snake! :love: )
With Chuffers, I make him "push" off my fingers or thumb with his legs. I also have him climb around and through stuff, as it keeps 'em strong. Like working out at the "Skink gym". :boxing:

I'm so glad your butterball is doing better! Your skink is a little fighter. I was just wondering, does she have full use of her tail? I'm also curious how she manages to poo.

It's kind of odd. The first time I actually saw her poop after the accident, she lifted her tail and both back legs high up in the air! I can't tell you how happy that made me when I saw that. That's when I 'knew' she was going to make it.

And yet, if she if on my skin, it is really hard for her to get anywhere as she only pulls with her front legs and does nothing with the back ones. She just sticks to my skin.

Also, if she is crawling over something that is on an angle, she sometimes just rolls on her side instead of putting her back leg out. I try not to laugh at her when she rolls, but it is kind of funny! :lol:

Oh, I was going to ask if the bump went away...so glad she's eating and I love the new name. :)

Butters is very sweet. Glad to hear she is feeling better. Thanks for sharing the x-ray films. That was really cool. 8)

So glad Butters is doing better. Funny, but for the last 3 days, I've been wanting to PM you about her/him. That is a great name. It reminds me of the buttery yellow color that these guys have on their sides after a shed.

Sounds like she is moving along so much better. I know you are giving her a great diet/care so I'll bet she continues to improve. Don't know if anyone does herp PT but swimming comes to mind with dogs who've had a rear leg removed. The only problem is that any instability could become worse if you overdo it. Butter's sister actually hates swimming (looks like a snake and hightails it for shore)---but my other bluey takes to it quite well. You might ask your exotic vet about it.

Thanks for updating us. I know it has been a rollercoaster but she is lucky to have such a devoted mommy!
